Tomorrow's turkey opener is a little more than a half a day away now. I've made it this far, so I think I can make it another few hours.

Looking forward to seeing the day come alive tucked against my familiar twin sycamore tree. If it ain't broke, don't fix it seems applicable. The spot has served me well the last few years.

I've been spying on a gobbler that has been following a harem of hens around the field I will be hunting tomorrow. Said harem is usually made up of eight hens.

I'm like a kid on Christmas eve.:)

Good luck to all and send a little luck my way, will you???

Gobba, Gobble.......Skychief.

Good Luck my friend.

You know of course with Mr Tom it is an easy hunt, for 4 days twice in the season. You hit the woods outside this zone and ya might as well stop by Safeway and get a butterball cuz it aint happening! Thats my experience. In the "zone" you can call em right in, outside.....they gobble but have little to zero interest in you or your call, or your grandpas special call or the diaphragm or the box or the slate or....

May the 4 day period start in the AM for ya and let us know!!

I can relate to the excitement. Our season here in Pa, opens on Saturday, and runs for about one month. My son and I went scouting tonight, and I had the pleasure of hearing two separate gobblers sounding off to a barred owl that was not too far from me. I'm going back to scout some more on Thursday and Friday evenings to get a better idea of where they're roosting and to mark a tree on my GPS to park myself on the opener.....

Best of luck Skychief. Our opener is in the morning too, but I doubt I'll get out. Please give us a full report.

AZ, I guess I need to move out your way. Our season has no surefire period, and most of the properties I hunt, birds responding to your call does not mean they will come all the way in. Nor does it mean they'll make it if they try, 3 times I've had other hunters set up between me and a bird I was working and kill the bird. I've also had toms show up without gobbling, twice I got busted getting up to change positions, by birds coming in silently.

If its gonna happen it is easy....if you can do your part....minimal calling (they know to the inch where you are parked when you call, even at several hundred yards), ability to be stone still (dont even blink) and being able to wait till they get in range. I have called 2 toms into less than 10 yds and last outing called two jakes in together to 5 feet (right behind the tree I was leaning on, I never saw em, son was upset he couldnt shoot cuz I was in the way LOL). If they are in any way henned up or are following hens, or hanging around nesting hens....head for Safeway

I agree Azmntman there are two sweet spots. How long they last varies on place. First one is early when the birds are still in their winter groups and looking for each other. The second is when the Hens are bred and start sitting on nests to lay their eggs. then the Toms are looking for company.

I'm pretty sure I hit the first one square on the head on opening day in my location. now I'm just hoping I don't miss #2!!

Good luck to you all out there chasing the elusive Thunder Chicken!!
