Rat, either way it makes sense for the saying meaning not really ready or without thinking it through or in haste.

Never been concerned about carrying my rifle with cap on and hammer resting on it, but then I always hunt alone. As for camp protection I keep my Walker handy with five with njpples and one bare to rest the hammer on.
