I think it refers to the person going off, leaving, with their gun only half-cocked...in other words, "not ready". Not the gun discharging at half cock. ?? :)

Never been concerned about carrying my rifle with cap on and hammer resting on it, but then I always hunt alone. As for camp protection I keep my Walker handy with five with njpples and one bare to rest the hammer on.
