Has anyone experimented or is happy with various spray paints for steel targets? I have several on order, and am curious what paints can be expected to stick well to the steel even after being hit over the course of a day. I don't mind painting every day, but every 2nd or 3rd day would be better. But I'd prefer not to close the range to repaint hanging clangers.

I suggest cheap rattle can in whatever color you like. We use white on the steel targets at the range where I volunteer. It doesn’t take long for them to get a lot of splatter marks. White shows hits easily.

I use whatever is the cheapest white or black spray paint I can find, that usually costs about $1.50 each around here for a 9 to 12 ounce can.
Everyone I know repaints about every 10 to 20 shots, depending on the size of the target.
White shows hits best.
Sometimes I prefer black if my front sight is white.

No paint is going to withstand bullet splashes very well, so might as well go cheap.

Correct

Just a little more expensive than the very cheapest generic will give you enough pigment to get a fast coat, BUT will dry fast. More expensive will give you a thicker coat that dries a tad slower, but you don't want that as larger chunks of the finish will fly off at impact.

I like florescent red, orange, and plain flat white.

Any paint works, its just what you can see best. If you shoot a lot you have to paint each day, big deal. I like white and red just because I see those colors best. And 2 dollar paint is just as good as 8 dollar paint.

I agree with the above. I have over 20 steel hanging targets and have them hanging on my range for over 20 years. I use the cheapest white I can find. At times, depending on the sun and the background black works better.

At Friendship where a lot of steel targets are shot we use cheap spray paint as well.

Paint color?

It is an individual choice. Where I use to shoot we kept white, black and orange cans behind the berm and let each person chose the color they wanted. I am color blind and could not see the orange and always used the black paint.

Cheap is best and our targets were painted after every relay. Paint does not last a week when shot.
The worst we shot were white in the spring when snow was still on the ground. Black works all year. Flat black best.

I have no preferance as to the type or brand. Even color is no biggie to me. My targets are their 3rd color in less than a year. I use what ever is on hand. Cheap or not -so -cheap, but I think anything less than cheap is really a waste of money.
