From the advice I got in a previous thread have decided that I need to get something of known quality as opposed to Traditions or Pedersoli. Looking at a rifle from Dixie with the L&R lock and wondering if this is a viable option. Price is at the upper end for me but figure I will only feel the pain once.

OUCH!! Felt the pain, just ordered a used Jackie Brown SMR style from Dixie, 7/8 42" 50 cal Colerain barrel with basic iron trim (no patchbox or nose cap), decent wood. Given the price on a Pedersoli and the potential issue with their lock figured for for less than $100 more I'll get one that will in all probability work right out of the box.

You won't feel the pain in a year or two, when that money would have just been spent and gone on bills, beer, burgers, bars, babes, or whatever. Spend good money on a good rifle, and you have something to show for it. Not just a memory, or no memory, of a babe, bar, burger, or beer. As long as the bills get paid, it's all good.

I've got an L&R Queen Anne flintlock on my smooth bore, and while it works ok, it isn't of the same quality or speed as my Chambers Siler on my Lancaster rifle. Comparing the two, the L&R is clearly made to lesser standards, and of cheaper materials than the SIler. I know its comparing two different types of locks, and only one L&R, but after buying and using the L&R, I doubt I'll buy another one of their locks. I'm not impressed with them at all.

Lock quality is variable even from Chambers. He has 4-5 people assembling his castings. Most locks are pretty good, but now and then a less than perfect one slips through. However, both companies are pretty good about correcting manufacturing errors. I have a LH L&R Siler clone that came in a rifle kit, and it is pretty darn good after I had them install a bent mainspring to replace the cast one. It worked OK as it was, but I was curious to see if it would improve. It did. Cost me $40 but you can't take it with you. I think maybe their newer locks may have the new spring.
If you can wait, save your money for a swamped barrel rifle.

Comparing commercial locks is like a Chevy/Ford debate. Some claim Davis locks are superior to L&R. I had a Davis lock that was utterly sorry and the company made me pay for a repair that was under warranty. If given one, I would use a Davis lock as nothing more than a paperweight. The L&R Classic I had was great, sparked like crazy. My current lock is a highly rebuilt and modified Chambers Siler redone by Dave Person. Incredibly beautiful, fast and reliable.

UPDATE: Rifle came today and it is now boxed back up and waiting to go to the PO tomorrow to go back to Dixie. The tiny pictures on the Dixie site definitely did it justice, and the description was optimistic in the extreme. So I am still looking, fortunately no rush as deer season is still months off.

If you call Dixie they will email you detailed pictures of the used/new/contempory/custom guns. Not the production guns though.

I sent my Queen Anne back to L&R and they replaced the cast mainspring with a new bent steel one. It helped my lock a lot with speed and hammer force but the the lock is still hard on flints due to the angle of the frizzen. The great thing was it was no charge to me for the upgrade only shipping so ya cant beat their customer service. Flintleather
