Even though I'm still leaning toward a custom rifle built to my specs, the Mortimer flintlock target rifle has caught my eye now.

Even though it's not in a caliber that I originally wanted, the Mortimer has all the cool features that I like;

Checkered stock
Target peep sight
Easy to see front sight
Nice lock
Browned half-octagon & half-round barrel
Hooked breech
Sling swivels

I like the sights. I hate to admit it buy my eyes aren't as good as they use to be and those sights (especially the rear peep) would be a big help.

There's just too many rifles to choose from.

You are being overcome by all the available guns out there. Talk about vacillating...…. you have gone from what "I thought" was a desire for a long rifle to the Moritimer target gun..... Step back and think hard on what you really want. Sights should not be your main concern here. I am pushing 73 with a cataract developing in my right (dominant) eye. I am still shooting regular sights..... It takes a bit of work but I am doing it.

Take a deep breath and think about the overall style you really want...…

JMHO from and old guy.

I must agree with you. I was in a bar with about 300 women once. Really. It’s the truth.

Any way there were only a couple other men there beside me. That was a 100 to 1 women to men.

Do you want to talk about dilemmas? At least I didn’t have to ask for a dance.

Now if only the rifle could pick me.

So, what kind of a bar was that...… with that ratio..... did you notice anything unusual about the "other" patrons......inquiring minds want to know.... ROFLMAO
Officers' Club at Sheppard AFB. Many, many, many, many years ago. The new Air Force Nurses were having a graduation dinner.

I never realized it till then but when you are one of the few that is different in the entire crowd, you have to watch how you behave and choose every word very carefully. There were 300 pairs of critical eyes watching every move you make.

I spent the entire evening with about 2 dozen very nice ladies. I didn't have to ask for a dance or buy a drink. Like I said; 300 pairs of eyes watching 3 men. So I behaved like and Officer and a gentleman.

On the other hand, I worry about my post-military career now. There was another occasion when I was in uniform, dancing with a very attractive lady. I kissed her. She kissed me back. That was it. Now I worry about the #Metoo movement catching up with me.

I worry about someone who was about 5' 5" and 110 pounds (back then) holding a press conference about someone in an USAF uniform kissing her on a dance floor. Only this time, she's probably 5' 5" and 210 pounds.

Did I answer your question? Okay, so let's get back to what type of flintlock rifle will satiate my appetite for a black powder fantasy.

Burtonwood Army Depot, England, 1969, small EM club attached to the hanger, 4 GIs, at least 20 gals every night, I was married, my wife was back in the states, it was nice watching them though.

In 1975, IIRC, there was an article in the Air Force Times about some WWII Army Air Corps reunions in England.

Some of the aircrew members had British girlfriends from 30 years earlier. Some of these same aircrews were married while they were defending democracy.

Thirty years later the British women found out that their old boyfriends were in town. The old girlfriends slapped their old boyfriends with 30 year old British paternity suits. Ouch.

The married crewmen had some explaining to do to their brides of over three decades. Double ouch.

So you might say that the 30 year old affairs were a little more than a “flash in the pan.”

Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

I lived on Burtonwood back in the fifties as a dependent. Our first quarters were Quonset huts from WWII. Good memories of exploring the bomb shelters and craters. Thanks for the jog to my memory.

Yes, you may be able to work around that developing cataract now. But once you have surgery to remove it and be replaced with a rigid plastic lens your shooting world will change. Plastic lenses do not adjust to focus for different ranges like your born with one does. Come back and tell us how things are going after you have that surgery.

On the issue of cataract replacement lens. I had mine done about 12 years ago and got both eyes done with lens that allow some level of focusing. It cost me extra, but has been worth it. Since then my eyes have changed enough where I have to use reading glasses on occasion(especially in low light) and I have a pair of glasses specifically for shooting and driving, but most of the time I don't need glasses. Check with your opthomologist when discussing replacement lens about this option.

That’s a nice looking rifle renegade I have the Pennsylvania rifle on order with TVM in .40cal. I’m about halfway through the wait and those pics make me even more anxious to have it. I got one of their .62 cal smoothbore about2 yrs ago, very happy with it.I have zero issues with TVM 5 stars in my opinion.

I’m 7 months in on my wait for my TVM Tennessee po’ boy.

To say I am anxious to see the final result is a gross understatement.

I’ve lied in bed just visualizing it and thinking of all the trappings I want to aquire for my shooting pouch, the list goes on. It will be my first custom. I ordered mine with a .40 swamped and a Chambers lock.
