I'm in New Jersey and years ago you could buy new black powders without a dealer. Can you buy them now without a dealer with a FFL? My wife even ordered one in the the mail back than. Can you just buy from you neighbor by just paying? Thanks Ron

You live in one of the most gun unfriendly states in the Union. As I recall transfers of black powder guns must go through a FFL in N.J.. You really need to understand all of the laws in your state as they are serious about restricting ownership of guns and there are some real Draconian penalties.

Agree with denster's reply. I doubt you can legally buy from your neighbor without a transfer. You should check your laws on your state and local websites. Do not take any state or local officials verbal word for this without seeing/having it in writing.

From Cabela's website re buying a black powder firearm:

Be sure to verify and do whatever your state requires as the legal expenses could be very large if some overzealous law enforcement person charges you with a crime.

NJ is a backwards state when it comes to firearms and most other things. i believe you do need a FFL for this state...something even in california you dont have to do for a muzzleloader handgun if my memory serves me right.

Good LUCK in Jersey my parents still live in that manure excuse for a state they are trying to outlaw black powder firearms all together in that state.you need one of there magic state firearms cards to even by ammo now.your best bet is to invest in a canoe and paddle as fast as you can for the border.I lived in Waren county for many years unfortunately, but I moved back to America across the river.

Not only do you have to have the ID card and go through an FFL, you need a pistol purchase permit for each handgun whether cartridge, BP or pneumatic.
Ask me how I know.

Maryland law makers are trying desperately to match the insanity of NJ and go beyond. I feel for you

I'm from E. Patterson via Jersey City, NJ and am living in North Dakota. Plenty room for ya out here.
Ain’t that funny I’m from Washington NJ and went to Towner North Dakota for a spell now I’m back in Pennsylvania.ya I sure liked it out there should have never come back east.

I called our police in New Jersey and asked if I had to register a bb gun brought back from PA. They said not needed but to buy one in NJ you need a pistol purchase permit. What do I do with my 40 year old black powders I bought in NJ 40 years ago when you could buy from Bass Pro Shop and ship here? Ron

Ship them somewhere gun friendly. Now pack your belongings into a pod and move to the place you sent them.:)

I spent the first 25 years of my life in NJ, a blackpowder pistol is the same as any cartridge handgun there, legally.

If you want to shoot BP firearms you're better of shooting rifles, at least those you can just get with the rifle and shotgun permit. I wouldn't even go through the hassle of all the permits for a BP handgun.

New Jerseyans have apparently been trying to find loopholes because gun show dealers in PA often have signs now "no muzzleloaders will be sold to NJ residents" In PA you can buy and sell any weapon that does not use fixed ammunition i.e. muzzleloaders all day every day as long as the person is 18+ and not a felon.
