Thanks for a great review! It's also interesting to note that there is a wider deviation and spread with the Swiss, which to me negates the small increase in velocity. I've always used Goex as well, and can't find any reason to try anything else. Well Actually, I was going to try some Swiss, but thanks to your great testing I won't need too!

Graf powder is made by Swiss

Nope. It’s made by Wano whatever. It’s rebranded Schutzen. It’s not Swiss. If it were there wouldn’t be the drastic difference between Swiss and Grafs in the pistol info I posted.

Not.., quite....,

Wano Schwarzpulver makes Schuetzen BP and also makes the powder for Graf's in Liebenburg, Germany, while Petro-Explo, Inc. with WANO Schwarzpulver produce Swiss BP in Aubonne, Switzerland. Supposedly the ingredients are different enough to notice a difference in performance.

[I wish I could insert a "shrug" emoji, here]

Used to buy the powder with a dragon on the package at Friendship. Now we buy goex in 5 pound bags then fill up our saved empty bp cans. I got goex in graf, schutzen, swiss cans. I mostly shoot shotguns so the minor difference in powder doesn't matter. Shotguns are more forgiving.

I might suggest you try a comparison by velocity rather than quantity. You may be surprised of the change. Let's face it every muzzleloader seems to have a sweet spot when it comes to velocity.

I understand that cannonball. The main purpose of the experiment was to see what the velocity differences would be with the same weight charges. The other info was collected because it was available. Actually, I was somewhat surprised there was only a 7/8" difference between the largest and smallest five-shot groups, given that no attempt was made to work up the most accurate load for each powder.

Good test! I am curious about the first target. The first shot registered a velocity extremely lower than the last four shots, which were very close to each other in velocity. Also, is that first shot the one at 5 o'clock? I wonder if maybe the breach had a little oil in it on the first shot? Thanks for sharing the test.

I have noticed at State shoots and National shoots, Goex is the most common found among the shooters.
Not your top shooters and not the Long distance shooters. At the Oak Ridge LR Muzzloader shoot in 2017 seventeen out of twenty of the top shooters were shooting Swiss.

I wondered about that first target also Barry. Unfortunately I didn't track the shots to match them with the chronograph readings. Like you, I suspect the low hit was the first shot, and the lower velocity a result of some residual oil in the bore.

Means nothing. One club, one event several years ago. Could just have been because that was the only product available from suppliers at the time.

Perhaps. But in my .54 rifles I saw a substantial difference in bullet drop between Goex and Swiss FF. Less so with FFF. The .54 Hawken below had been sighted in using Swiss and dropped at least 8" with Goex. I'll takes photos to show this when I can get to the range.
