A local store is running a sale this week with Crown at $20/bottle for the regular and the flavored stuff. I dont like the favored stuff either.

Took advantage of local Hy-Vee liquor store special: Crown Royal Canadian & Crown Royal Rye at $20/5th with $5 rebate if bought 2. The rye is pretty good and certainly reasonably priced. I also found a way to make lower shelf whiskey better pleasing to my palate. I bought a bargain bottle of Angostura Bitters in the discount cart and I now shake a few drops on top of the whiskey, swirl it and sip - both over ice and neat. I like the taste and takes away the aftertaste often found in cheap offerings. My inherant German 'frugalness' doesn't allow me to drink the good stuff routinely; I save the good stuff for special friends and special occasions. That award winning American whiskey from the McCormick Distillery in Weston, MO. that i mentioned in a previous reply is called 'Triple Crown'. My son said he bought a bottle a couple of years ago in a specialty liquor store in Iowa City.
The holiday season is upon us.......more opportunities to break out the 'good stuff'.

Straight Up: Kentucky Bourbon (2018)

To start with, I can't remember a whiskey I would not drink. Seems like every bottle I have ever purchased is gone..... I generally have a bottle of Segrums XO Gold around (I think I have the name right). It is a nice blended Canadian that is smooth. When I am in the liquor store with my XO in hand, I generally wander to the Bourbons. I try different ones, but mostly can't remember what I liked best.... I am trying some different Scotches and like the less strong tasting ones. I am thinking when I dive into a real bottle of peat it must be accompanied by a cigar..... Issue is "She who must be obeyed", has a real problem with cigars.....

Travler, The real peat bombs (my preference) are usually from Islay. They also tend to cost more if that's a factor. For a milder scotch, try a 'sherry cask' style. For a fruitier scotch try Dalwhinnie single malt. Not cheap but tasty. Dalwhinnie isn't inexpensive but I drink so little at a time, a bottle lasts a LONG time. Hope this helps.

PS: If you smoke a pipe, I find the milder scotch goes well with a light aromatic tobacco.

Makes me chuckle. Good booze was important to most societies. Classical Rome was famous for its wealthy wine snobs, and Cato the younger was made fun of for how much nasty cheep wine he drank.

So true tengun! Those guys were also a little younger than I am too! LOL

Travler, I also share your fondness for whiskeys (or whiskys). I love the Glenlivet, Dalmore or McCallans, but can no longer afford them as often. My utility Scotch is a blend. See if you can find Scoresbys, a nice mild, non-smokey Scotch.

These " liquid products" that so many of y'all have mentioned, could they be used as a cleaner or solvent? At least that way they'd serve some useful purpose.

I was gifted a bottle of Balvinnie Doublewood. Had to be western lowlands made. It was ultra smokey and maybe filtered through dried peat several times. Took me a long time to finish it. Opposite of what you are looking for but couldn’t resist some “Scotch talk”. JW red is a blend that’s on the lighter side. Pricey of course but not a bad way to go. Tried Pinch? Another lighter blend.

Laphroaig single malt if I'm forced to drink scotch, otherwise almost any bourbon will do.

I asked my wife to pick up a couple bottles for me at the Liquor Store when she went into town yesterday. She came home with a bottle of White Owl, which was discussed here awhile back. Great stuff, and apparently there were a dozen more bottles on the shelf. An increase in production? As long as quality doesn't suffer, I'm all for that.

But...the second was a bottle of Crown Royal, which is made right in Gimli Manitoba, only 18km from my house (a hair over 11 miles for you southerners!). They always have it in stock and it's excellent, even though I don't usually select rye whisky as my drink of choice. This one, however, is called Northern Harvest and is labelled as being 90% actual rye. Normal Crown Royal has only a very small percentage of actual rye in its make-up; it's mostly corn. American rye whisky needs to be 51% rye to qualify as "rye whisky", but apparently we dumb Canucks can call anything rye.

It's terrific! Makes me re-think my prejudices and preferences regarding rye whisky; who knows, maybe I can even learn to drink Bourbon!

I've tried a fair number of whiskeys and liked about all of them to one degree or another. I do really like bourbon and rye. My favorite for a good while now, has been Wild Turkey bourbon. I've had others I liked, but WT is what I usually get. Howsomever, All I have at the present time is a large bottle of Jim Beam. It is very good. The only reason I bought JB this time instead of WT is that it was on sale. It's fine and I'm happy.

I like rye and the ones I've tried have all been excellent. But once again WT makes my favorite rye. It doesn't seem to be available in my part of Maine; but I keep my eyes peeled. And I prefer my whiskey straight, with no ice. Occasionally I'll have it with ice, but it dilutes the flavor too much IMO. Tequila and vodka are okay but I don't buy them nowadays.

What else? Ah, rum. A good dark rum often hits the spot and I don't care to mix it. A mixed drink from time to time is nice but not my favorite way to enjoy whiskey. Brandy is nice and I occasionally partake.

My go to whiskey is Knob Creek Maple Whiskey, although my brother says I should drink their straight rye whiskey like a real man.

Bourbon seems to always be Buffalo Trace.

Scotch- I prefer Balvenie Caribbean Cask. The final 2 years are finished in a rum cask, gives it just a hint of sweetness. Not a cheap one so I don't drink it often.

Another vote for Dickel #12. It is a great value. I don't know what Tennessee sippin' whisky was like in olden days but this stuff is seriously tasty. The higher corn content makes it a nice change from regular bourbon.

Wild Turkey Rye is one of the best tasting and cheapest rye's that you can find. They dont sell it in Iowa, but I find it in other states.
