At the request of several members I'm going to post up a section on brain tanning. Unfortunately this won't be a pictorial how-to as it's -4 out with fresh powder, however I'll include order images of the process along with a detailed description.
There are many ways to tan, some better than others but from experience tanning many hides throughout the years trapping and hunting with my dad and grandfather nothing and I mean nothing beats brain tanning. I have personally tanned everything from coon to buffalo. While I'll never tan a bison hide again the experience was humbling, which indeed will be touched on later.
Currently have a fresh doe in the freezer that I will be tanning, obviously at a later date but images will follow of that process when weather allows.
This thread will be for the discussion of the historical brain tanning process, no modern discussion of tanning in regards to chrome, veg tanning or the like. I'd like to keep the discussion on track for the intended purpose. Indeed stay tuned, after digging out of the blizzard we received yesterday I'll sit down and compile more material for everyone to follow. Currently have several large downed limbs to process, more stove wood is always welcome.
Stay tuned, more to come shortly, just wanted to get the word out the meat and potatoes will be coming.
