This year WV implemented a Mountaineer Heritage Season after all other seasons where a hunt may hunt with "primitive " equipment. That includes caplock, flintlock rifles, and trad bows.

So, I took out my 50 cal TC Hawken caplock and snuck around the woods for all of 5 mins before I found a small doe hunkering down away from the snow.
I was able to get lined up on her and make a great double lung shot at 25 yards. She ran about 10 yards and fell over! I'm blessed to get 1 more deer for my wife and I!

I was wondering if any other WV hunters were on this forum and hunted in this inaugural season?

Really envious that ya’ll can still be hunting, but if ya can’t be out there then the next best thing are the stories and pictures. Great shooting on some excellent meat! Congrats.

Cool, that was short and sweet!
You mention bullet! Did you not use a ball?
You only mention rifles. Are smoothbores excluded from this West Virginian trad season?

Thanks for sharing.

Britsmooty:

I should pay more attention to my words! I used a 345 maxiball that my godfather cast.

And as far as I know, smoothbores are allowed. The way I read the regs, the only language is that it must be a side hammer cap/flintlock

Glad you got her! My nephew killed an 8pt Saturday with his .58 flintlock. It was his first buck with this rifle but has taken 4 or 5 does with it.
Brit the regulations say either cap or flintlock single shot doesn't say it can't be a smooth bore as far as I can understand it. Does need to be a single projectile though. Dan.

How long is your MH season? We've been trying to get a similar season in Michigan but no success yet.

Good job sneaking up on a bedded deer! I love stalking.

That young doe is going to be some nice tender venison.

I live in Jackson Co.,and I hunted two evenings, but didn't pull the trigger on anything.

Glad to see that another state has established a special season for people who want to hunt the "old" ways. Minnesota's late Muzzleloader season started that way, but now everything goes, scopes and all. With the latest in those things we don't discuss, that's like a modern single-shot rifle season. :(

can non residents also hunt during this primitive season?
I just checked, and yes, BUT they stick it to an adult on licence $119, and require a conservation stampstamp$13 dollars this gives you statewide hunting, and trapping,BUT then they charge you $32 for a muzzle loading stamp, and $37 aditional if you want to try for an extra deer .We also have a muzzle loading season in December, but the sad thing is if you bought your license for the 2019 season it won't be good for nest years Heritage season. You can buy it in Early January 2020,and hunt the heritage season, and the December season. From my take on the regulations is that you can also hunt the regular buck firearms season as well on the same license, and stamps. If you intend to be hunting with one of your children ,their licence, and stamps are very inexpensive. You can also purchase a doe season, and archery stamp for $32 each, and $37 for extra deer. This is my take from reading the regs. You can down load a PDF of them if you want..I consider myself lucky in the fact that I don't need a license to hunt my own land.

I have a cousin that lives at Pipestem. Not sure what the deer population is like there.....seems to be one behind every tree when I am camping there in the summer.

Should be good .I live in the Mid-Ohio valley, and have never really hunted the more mountainous areas lot of folks from around here go to the mountainous areas to hunt black bear, but I have never killed one.A couple of our south eastern counties do have poor deer hunting.
