I have a 54 cal Hawken rifle. It has a 51.5 inch OAL. Barrel is 34.5 inches long. Across the flats it is 1 inch. Pull length is 14 inches. Double set triggers and was made by D. B. Horne. Very nice shooting rifle. You will not be disapointed. 1100.00 plus shipping.

1. Barrel manufacturer and twist rate?

2. Lock manufacturer?

3. Trigger manufacturer an are they double lever, double set?

4. Wedge keys captured?

5. Rear sight type? Buckhorn or semi buckhorn? Adjustable or fixed.

6. Front sight blade? Silver in brass or copper base??

More information please.

Respectfully, Cowboy

Barrel is a Douglas XX. I believe it is a 1 in 60 twist. Lock is a Cherry Corners. Trigger is double set. Unknown make of triggers. Pics of wedge and front and rear.

I do not want to lead you into any false hopes that I’m interested in this rifle my friend.

The purpose of my inquiries was to help you in the selling of your rifle.

The question’s that I had asked are detrimental to those who might be truly interested?

The Douglas XX barrel and Cherry Corners Lock are very desirable! The triggers being double lever, double set are standard as it should be for a Hawken Rifle.

I wish you the very best and appreciate your reply with the additional pics.

This additional information may help you as well as those who may be interested ??

Respectfully, Cowboy

I had this for sale at Friendship and tried to fine out who is D.B Horne but was unable. The year it was made I am not sure. I have had it for about 6 years. It is a hooked breech but not sure of if slant or flat. It is a half stock and I will post a full length pic.

I have a .54 cal Harper's Ferry 1803 custom made by Don "Pappy" Horne, who may be the same maker as your Hawken. He was featured in the Book of Buckskinning II (I believe). I have the issue home and will look it up later and post. Pappy has long since gone under and was know for his Harper's Ferry, but I believe he built Hawkens as well. Again, I will try to remember when I get home. I'm at work now.

I think it was in Book of Buckskinning III, if anyone reading this thread can verify before I get home later today.

Patriot: "Pappy Horne" is still with us though not doing well at all. I spoke with his son Bruce (the "B" in the mark) yesterday and he confirmed the build. Bruce said, the gun should have a date stamped on the bottom barrel flat although Bruce said some guns did not get dated. He did not remember this particular gun (no surprise as they built quite a few guns) but did say it was likely from the 70's considering the parts.

Just FYI

Years ago I tried to get in touch with him and was told he had passed on. It is good to hear he is alive and I pray for him. My 1803 has "Pappy" on the top flat.

First of all I would like to thank everyone for there help. I purchased this from one of our club members in declining health a few years back here in the St Louis area. I have the buckskinning book and looked Don Horne up in it. Also I looked under the barrel and it is marked 1977. Then there is #51.

You are quite welcome. Was your friend a member of the Gemmer club ?

Yes he was as am I.

Shot there many times years ago. Art Ressel was a good friend. Another good friend, Chuck Hearn (former NMLRA President) shot a good bit of bench rest there also.

I remember one winter shoot back in the day when spit patches were freezing befor you could get the ball rammed down the barrel. Guys would shoot and come back to the fire and get their barrels warmed up and then load and go back and shoot. Those were good times.
