Well here I am in the middle of England and they say around here that you don’t have to learn to swim because we are as far away from the sea as you can get (its only 72 miles).

Anyway enough of this, muzzLe loading is what it’s all about. Here in the UK about the best rifles we can get is Pedersoli from Italy and I have three. A Rocky Mountain Hawken 54 cal, a Pennsylvania Dixey 45 cal and a Missouri River Hawken 50cal all percussion locks mainly because the flint we get are not very good to say the least. I cast my own ball and bullets which is something I really enjoy doing and now that I am retired I shoot about three times a week. What a wonder life.

Welcome! There are a number of your countrymen hereabouts.

72 miles from the sea? I used to drive 143 miles (each way) to get to our boat on a lake - and never left NY State. Pretty much every weekend in the summer.

No wonder you needed so many colonies!

Welcome to this forum John, I am surprised re the gun flints, black English gun flints are some of the best in the world, & they have been making them there for centuries.
All the best.

Hello from deepest Sussex. There are other options, but only if you’re lucky enough to be able to afford custom guns, which thank the lord, I am. Not sure what your problem with flints is. I have no problem with English flints and I’ve been shooting flint guns for many years.

Welcome and WHAT????? I live a short drive from Brandon in Norfolk, where the very best English flints come from. They've been made here for tens of millions of years, just that we haven't dug 'em all up yet. :) Over in Wales there's even a county named after the prevailing geology - Flint. No shortage of good gun flints here, OP, you must have been buying that there Frenchy stuff, eh?

tac, East Anglia England, Northumberland County Ontario and Lane County Oregon.

I hear you about the lack of Sea access...I live in Derby, so sea-side holidays mean Matlock Bath, a place in the Peak District!

The knaped flints we get, I am told come from India. So now I plan to make cut flints using a diamond tile cutter with English flint from the East coast not far from Grimes Graves. I’ll keep you posted how it goes

I’ll be really interested to see how that goes. Where are you buying “Indian knaped” flints from? I’ve never heard of any myself.
