My son Jacob and I draw the same deer tag every year. The Hunt is short and he never can hunt more than just one weekend. What I normally do is hunt for a buck until the day before he gets there. The day before he gets there I just try to fill my tag with what ever I see. That way we can focus on finding him a buck. He only has 2 or 3 days to hunt. If I shoot a deer on one of his days he looses a day helping me pack out a deer.
The weather this year was very nice. I hiked into some ridges that are above the river. I saw a ton of deer.

This year he got there on Thursday and I had been holding out for a buck I found but never got a shot at. I took a doe so I could help him to try to get the buck.

This year was a good year for seeing bucks. It was not a good year for Jacob's shooting. His first shot was 125 yards steep down hill. He shot right over the bucks back.
The next one was 50 yards in heavy brush. I saw his bullet strike a twig and the buck was lucky.
We spent a couple days riding our bikes to walk in areas and having the time of our lives.

On the last day Jacob decided to take the first deer he had a shot at. We found a single do and Jacob got a shot at her.

I really wished he would have got a buck but I enjoyed my week of hunting. It was great to see a lot of deer and elk. We even saw a pretty good bear. Over all the hunt was fun and we enjoyed it like every year.

Thanks Ron for taking us along. You and your boy had fun and it shows in the photos!

Good on you for bringing him up right!

Again thanks for the great essay and photos. Beautiful country out your way.

Best regards, Skychief.

Thanks guys. I enjoy this hunt mostly because of my son going on it. A week in the mountains just enjoying life.

Oh that's funny, I also have a Honda trail 90 that I use sometimes. Has the hi-low range on the tranny, which comes in handy on that small of an engine. Also use a 350XL Honda and have a Yamaha TT500 too. I don't attempt to hunt "off" them either, just go to different spots to hunt. Way more fun than driving the mountain roads in a truck.

How is the wolf situation there? I hunt in Northeastern Washington, and they are getting thicker than ticks, and the deer, not so thick.

I sure wish AZ had a opportunity for a doe hunt. Most years the youth can take a doe up north of the Grand Canyon but I thin its been like 25 years since adults could apply, then if drawn you have to take a doe. I gotta start a push to get a hunt like PA, flintlock PRB deer (any) hunt. Flint only would sure make the odds of a draw alot easier w/o all the in-line folks and cap only guys.

My sons Jake too, my favorite times have been on hunts with him, we got a lot of great stories that if we could have captured on video wold make us alot a $$$! Congrats!

Congratulations!! My father in law and I have been kicking around the idea of a Idaho muzzloader hunt. I like that you can shoot a doe on some of the hunts. That terrain your hunting looks like what my father in law would be capable of hunting. Great pictures!
