Is it normal that the tang on the left side of a Lyman Great Plains Hunter is visible but not on the right side? See pic below.

Ha. I just looked at my GPR and it's the same way.
I've had the gun for years and never noticed that before.
I guess the inletting is just not done all that carefully?

I think what they're trying to tell you is your rifle isn't defective or flawed, it's just a mass produced factory rifle.
Lyman still does a great job with maintaining the important issues of keeping production standards regarding the accuracy and reliability of their guns high on the list.
Minor cosmetic issues are why factory guns are $600 and not $1500. ;)

As long as the tang is bedded tight and the barrel fit's good. All is good.
Hows it shoot? The "Hunter" is a fast twist right?

I have a Lyman GP Hunter in .54 Cal, The only Brand new Current production Muzzleloader i have ever Bought. I have the Lyman 57 Tang Peep sight on mine, along with the Lyman 17 Globe Front that i use Fine BPCR inserts in (Lee Shaver’s) I have shot bullets from 450 Grains to 650, My rifle shoots EXTREMELY well! I am not use to the Length of the Gun, i prefer my TC Hawken’s, And Renegade’s with GM LRH Barrels. But nothing wrong with the Lyman GP Hunter!

Here is my Rifle, i shoot Free Recoil, The Dish Clothes are in the rubber coated Yokes so that my Rifle Can freely Slide.

I have one of those i bought new several years ago shot if a lot off the bench using the GP Bullet and triple 7 had no trouble getting 3" groups at 150 yards, but never killed a deer always used my RB guns because they are all lighter to carry.

I hear ya! This Rifle shoots AWESOME, No complaints there! I am not a Big Fan of the cumbersome length, And feel, The first Modification i did to this Rifle was the Crescent Butt Plate, i rounded off the Ridiculously Sharp edges and installed a Nice Lace up Leather Pad. Even though this Lyman GPH Shoots Extremely well, i MUCH Prefer my TC Hawken’s, and Renegades Setup with Green Mountain LRH Barrels.
