....with some new folk about to try using shot, some having ignition issues with caps and some babbling about leaving loaded and condensation I decided to post this.

I used the same gun I used a week ago yesterday. It had not been cleaned except for a greased patch run down the bores and my home made grease around the barrels.
The only issue I knew I had caused was when I got some grease near the nipple holes, I cussed as I knew that was going to put the fire out and it dutifully did!

In the field yesterday I had to remove the nipples and add a little fresh powder and refix the nipples and we were away.
What I should of done is remove the nipples last week and protected them!

Anyhow the gun has not rusted outside or inside and did not fill up with condensation after entering the house.

The results.

The gun this time got boiling water treatment until the breech was to hot to touch. Water in, tip out, repeat.
A dry patch and a few moments after a greased patch. Greased outside and once cooled a little strokes from a patched rod to listen for spital in the nipples, there was none, the heat had worked.
That's all that is required, no special love position #9! Just salt dissolving hot water.

Beautiful gun, beautiful dog, beautiful country. I don't feel like I'm undergunned using primitive equipment. Learn how to take care of your gear and it will work for you.

As I stated it is a very neat ideal, do you use it to just cover the cones or when the gun is capped. Also if when capped how does it work when setting the hammer. Also I am envious of you when it comes to the pheasants. There are not many around where I hunt in western Maryland, plenty of rabbits but not many birds if I flush one now I watch him and whish him good luck. Each February I get together with a few friends and hunt a bird preserve, I really enjoy watching the dogs mostly German shot hairs and springers doing the pointing and labradores as flushers. We are currently awaiting the arrival of a Labrador puppy. He will be a great companion and my even do a bit of training with him for geese. Our Old English sheep dog passed on a few months ago and I miss him dearly. Will not live without a dog. My bucket list has a driven English grouse hunt on it, I admire the old ways and traditions, classic side by sides and tweed and waxed canvas hunting attire. wet dogs and the smell of heather and gun smoke hanging on the air. Nicely put:cool:
I just use it to keep moisture out if I don't clean or is kept loaded a while.
Regards the capped nipples I carry the gun with hammers on the caps not half cock.
