Welcome back!

Is New Zealand getting as tight as Australia regarding gun ownership?
We're hearing scary things about that here in the States.

Thanks for the welcome. (Sorry about the delay replying - I couldn't reply from work.)
Re comparing us to Oz, the answer is Yes and No.
I'm hearing that we have better gun laws than Oz - and we are totally different to the US.
- Pistols are severely restricted and require special gun licences to buy or use them.
And they have to be stored in a safe when not being used.
- military style semi-auto rifles are also restricted (ie mags > 7 rounds etc)
and have to be stored in a safe when not in use.
- We need special pistol shooters licences to even own and shoot pistols (inc BP ones)
- We can't carry pistols in the street, nor use them for defence;
and can only shoot them on special certified pistol ranges.
- But we can own air pistols without any gun licences (unlike Oz).
- We can own almost any sporting rifle or shotgun so long as it is over 30" long, and it is not classified as an ex-military style gun. Sporting guns include bolt / pump action / semi auto / BP etc
- modern BP rifles and shotguns are classed as sporting guns, and need a 'Sporting Gun licence' to buy them.
- Sporting rifles need to be stored in lockable gun racks or safes when not in use.
- Silencers are quite legal, and commonly used hunting here now.

If you have the 'Collectors Licence' you can buy anything and there is a strong collectors association - that I belong to.

fyi - We do have a high rate of firearms ownership here, but there is a very responsible shooting culture.
And we have a very very low rate of firearms crime and shooting accident statistics.

And have I said too much?
I look forward to lots of conversations...Cheers...T

The guy Von Gruff lives way south of me (Over the Cook Straight ocean and then about 500 miles South) . Here's his WEB page.

re the revolver, I do my own gunsmithing and loading, and have lightened the trigger to about 1/2 lb and a 1/4" trigger pull. I shoot BP competitions with it.

Thanks for the reply on the "government gun culture" in NZ

Sounds like you are in good shape for long-guns. We have more variations as states and even counties can add their own ideas of what we need to protect us from ourselves. Anything goes (short of full-auto without a special license) in many states, while others are MUCH more restrictive. Even in New York State (not City) I am able to take a concealed pistol into most areas - Federal Buildings and courts, no. Provided the magazine for anything holds no more than 10 rounds. (Gov. Cuomo did pass an "act" that limited civilians and police to 7 rounds but it was shot down as being "random and capricious" by the State Supreme Court (thank God).

Carry on.

Welcome back, Tony B.
As a private citizen of Pennsylvania, I have carried a handgun pretty much everyday since I was 20-some years old (I'm 75 now).
We look forward to your joining in the conversations.
