Hey guys, I have good friend who owns a tree business. He was working on a large tree and took this off of a branch.

How do you keep it from cracking as it dries out
I think it is cottonwood, but dummy me did not know I would have a dry out problem, which I did. I should have asked for a thicker slice. My arborist friend has an endless supply. One obviously does not need so large a diameter, but it helps when kids throw to keep the hawk out of the Wait a Minute Bushes :rotf:

Larry, Mine was poplar too, I slathered it with crankcase oil I got from the local garage for free, let it take all it will. Lasted for years.

I could STILL hit the metal hardware! Surrounding it with all that fine wood won't stop me from chipping an edge. I have a nack

Kidding aside, that looks like a great setup :applause:

Makes me want to throw my hawk.
With the effort you've got in it, it might be worth banding it with a barrel hoop or perhaps screwing a plywood panel to the back.
Nice job!

If you want to keep the all wood appearance; you could get a wood bore 3/4" or 1" and as long an extension you can find. Drill from outside through the center of the thickness toward the center or across the edges. Blow out the dust and chips and using low priced dowels, cover the outside with wood glue and insert into the holes. Tap completely into the holes depth. You'll need to measure the full length of the bore and extension total to get the measurements for the dowels.

Larry,
I know that you didn't throw that hawk "Plum Center", cause I've known you for years and never seen you hit center in any hawk throwing! :rotf: :blah:
