Clark's Illustrated Treatise on the Rifle, Shotgun and Pistol, (1850) lists Eley's chemically prepared felt gun wads. Both pink edge and concave edge, the latter guaranteed to permit 6 to 8 times more shots between cleanings than with paper wads. So the use of prepared wads must have predated fixed shotgun cartridges.

I feel super stupid for asking, but how do I go about attaching pictures on this site? I would like to show some of the prototype cartridges...

Your pictures need to be uploaded to a photo hosting site like Imgur. there are others just don't use photobucket. Then once uploaded that site will give you the codes to copy choose one that ends in jpg or png then click on the little mountain and sun icon above your text box this will open a new window for you to put the code in.

I don't explain it very well...maybe someone else will better,

The code will look something like this.

Were the original Eley cartridges buffered ?

Seems to me buffering might hinder the concept.

From a previous post stated by the True west artickle.

"Thanks to a handy invention known as the “Eley wire cartridge,” shotgunners could greatly reduce the time involved in charging a muzzle-loading shotgun. This product, sold by the Eley Brothers””famed British ammunition producers””was constructed using a cylindrical, soft copper, mesh sleeve, which contained a load of pellets. Packed in bone dust to resist deforming"

Incase you missed it there. Personally I think it may pack them into a slug like pouring the shot full of wax will.

Could be. From what I've read about it, the slugging effect was an initial problem. Later, according to all the positive reviews from the period they apparently overcame that problem.

I'm just getting back in from visiting and helping family in the coastal SC region. So, I'm hoping to start spending some time this weekend experimenting

A interesting story about slugging. After a ton of fooling around with dime tube shot cups I thought I’d had it figured out. So I took my 12 bore flint Fowler out for pa gobbler season. Amazingly I called in the dumbest turkey in the state. He was strutting at a bit less than 15 yards when the shot came. He went down instantly. I walked over to pick him up and found him almost minus his head. The paper encased shot slug caught him in the neck, and only left a strip of skin holding the head on. I was half concerned I’d run into our Game Warden, and be accused fo using a round ball instead of shot. On later thought I’m sure I was all right as I didn’t have any balls in my pouch or truck. BJH

PS On cleaning the bird no shot was found, so I’m certain the shot cup slugged.
