Shooting ideas to beat my son in law

I need some match ideas to counter challenge my son in law. (spunky kid wants to beat the old man) Three different times at the range he has pulled a " I challenge you for a beer or lunch". The first time he wanted to just shoot for score at 25 yards. His idea and I beat him. The second time he challenged me, he said pick the match. I chose we should both shoot left handed (we are right handed shooters) Again I lucked out and beat him. Well the third outing, we were pressed for time, but he was saying we need another beer lunch bet. I am asking for different (but safe) shooting ideas that will make it fun. (1,2 or 3 shots)

It takes set-up but;
Cut a string
Cut a card.
Take a bulls-eye target and fold it in half at the 10 ring,(blind side out), then fold it again,, so the ten ring is actually at the corner. Hang it like a diamond. Shoot for score.
All kinds of card games.
Don't shoot the Ace of Hearts,, shoot the "Heart" out of the upper left/lower right corner.

"Record Breaker" suspend and tie and old vinyl record (33 1/3 or 45 rpm)with a string. The object is to shoot it off by either hitting the string or breaking enough of the record so that it falls off of the string.

A sure winner for you, no matter what the bet or competition... accept every challenge. But you load for him..... :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

Paint ball pistols at 10 paces perhaps?

If it's beer and lunch he wants, try this.

Hot glue a charcoal briquette standing up to the bottom of an unopened can of beer....Set the beer can upside down at whatever distance you want. The object is to shoot the briquette without destroying your beer... :grin:
(note: charcoal briquettes explode nicely....So does beer)

Now for lunch....
The classic boiled egg hanging on a string....Tell them one is not boiled. you miss you eat that egg.(note usually there really is an un-boiled egg) with this one, he can win or he can eat....:grin:

Most consecutive shots in a three inch diameter circle (or larger) wins the match. Miss once you are finished. You could make his a little bigger. :grin:

You didn't mention if it's at a formal range or not...,

You can get an inexpensive metal hanging target, or a plastic reactive target.

Start at 25 yards. Each shoots one round. Then back up 5 yards and repeat. First person to miss..., loses.

Sometimes when such a match has a bunch of shooters, it offers a Mulligan..., on the first miss, the shooter can call "Mulligan", and have one more try, BUT after that one Mulligan-shot, any further misses and the shooter is out. "Mulligan" must be called before the next shooter fires..., BUT if everybody at that particular distance from the target misses, all the shooters repeat without penalty. So does the shooter who missed "gamble" that none of the other shooters can hit the target at that range? 'Cause if one shooter does hit, those that missed are "out".


At a formal range where you have to stand at the firing-line and can't back up, and have to call a cease-fire anytime you go forward of the firing line..., you can do this same style match but you need to post a reactive target every five or ten yards, or paper targets (though you might need optics to look at the paper targets). A bit more logistics, but it can be done.

Every time I hear son-in-law and shooting, I recall when ours was dating our daughter and trying to show his stuff.

Lotta stories I could tell, but the best was the time he and I were out shooting, then my wife and daughter joined us. He was all excited and wanted to show off his shooting, so challenged our daughter to shoot too.

He hadn't really thought about just how his fiancee might have grown up in an outdoor family. :wink:

She pinned his ears back so tight to his head, he was downright speechless. Trying to redeem himself even a little, he next challenged my wife to a round. She did an even more thorough job of ear pinning! :grin:

The State Range I shoot at says you have to use paper targets for some reason :idunno: . Anyway tape two aspirin to the target, using scotch tape, one for each of you. Both of you get the same amount of shots, when one shoots the aspirin and the one doesn't, buys. You REALLY want to make this hard :hmm: , tape them to a white sheet of paper with no markings. DANNY

A variant on "record shoot" that I like is as such:
You each have a 45 rpm record. Tape or attach it to the back of a paper target so it's easier to post or hang. You may want to put some other color paper/tape/whatever behind the hole in the record, to make it easier to see. Post the target at 25 yards, and take a shot. To score, the shot must be completely inside the hole. Even touching vinyl is scored as a miss. For a decent shooter or better, it's a doable shot. But the psychology of not nicking the record makes it all out of proportion to it's actual difficulty. And if the record is by an artist he really likes, so much the better!

vinyl? 45rpm? I don't know whether to chastise you guys for suggesting such anachronistic targets for a muzzleloader, or to laugh at the idea of paying top dollar at an antique store for a target.

OR..., you take modern, whole wheat flour and wheat bran, and water, and make a really large "ship's biscuit" out of it with a hole in it to string it up..., then when it's gets busted up all you have is remnants that are biodegradable.
