My first powder horn build

Been wanting to do one of these since I was 20. 32 years later I finally did. This is what I got finished today.

Thanks gents.....I am a Middle School Art teacher and a leather tooler/worker and I like to do things I've never done before. My first leather project was 2 years ago when my wife bought me a pair of .45 Colt Ruger Vaqueros. I made a fast draw western holster rig and it turned out nice so I started doing custom leather work. I have not decided how to attach the strap yet. I have a hand weaved/spun wool sash, but I could whip up a pretty nice leather strap with buckles or put some leather ends on the sash. Just don"t know yet.
I finished the end of the horn last night. I made a walnut plug to fit the end without boiling/stretching the horn. It is somewhat oval and was time consuming. I pegged it in with bamboo pegs then filed and sanded the end into a cookie? shape. I installed a threaded brass plug for filling. I will be doing some scrimshaw also.

don't know about the scrim ... you might want to take a step back and look again ... i like it plain ...

just an observation _ free advice and doubtless well worth the cost.

Nice job!!! WELCOME TO TMF! That first powder horn is the one you always keep!

On your next one, you might thin the throat area down to flow with the rest of the lines of the horn. That's just this horner's opinion and two cents worth.

By the way, you don't have to be invited to be a member on The Horners Bench website.

Thanks for the advice. I could not thin it down anymore because I drilled the plug hole at a slight angle and was dangerously close to coming through the side in the throat area....glad I saw the light glowing through the horn before I went any further.

I'm thinkin' that the forum originally posted in was limited to the use of accessories, and not the making - but I would have thought it moved to the Craftsman section ILO the Photos section.

You do great work, that's for sure. Very, very nice.

Great job mate, as far as long term projects you are not on your pat there, I repaired a forge that I bought 34 years ago and finally set up a blacksmith shop!
Your first effort indicates a lot of thought and a really nice result !!
