Did you try to blow the chuck out with some air? Might have a chip stuck up in there. WD 40 with the that small hose on it might clean it out too.
If not you might have to take it off the spindle taper and replace it or take it apart.
I don't remember how to take one apart. :hmm: But it will come apart from the back side of the chuck.

Lehigh..

Hoyt,

Hope you have a fast recovery from your bypass surgery. Most people say that they start feeling better right away after they have that done.

God bless,
Tim Mullican

As was said, WD40 or some other penetrating oil sprayed up inside the chuck would be a good start.
The jaws sometimes freeze up if rust forms on them. The penetrating oil should soak for a day or so, then try it. If the jaws won't move, rotate the outer sleeve in the direction that would increase the size the chuck would hold. Then with a metal rod and a small hammer, see if you can tap them further up into the chuck.
After you tap them a few times, try rotating the outer sleeve to make the jaws move. This may take several repeats to break them loose but basically a chuck is a fairly simple thing so a little fiddleing with it should get it working again.
:)

SKS, Hoyt's Just had his second or third Bypass surgery on Friday, in case yer not aware they crack yer ribs down the middle and go in and replace some or all the veins and arteries going to and from the heart, and then send you home three or four days later to mend. He's still on serious pain meds, so he's typin like Zonie when he gets a case of the sillies. I think Hoyt's 72, from what I got from another forum he post's on with some of us. He was wanting info about how to unstick the chuck on his drillpress, and was telling us he won't be able to hunt til next year, so his plans are to build the slimmest profile 40 cal. he can get to keep himself busy, while he mends. Actully I have a couple spare Chucks (1/2") if you can't get it broke free, they're the type with tapirs. It's yours for postage. Hang in there every day is a little bit easier, but you all ready know that. My thoughts, and prayers are with you. Boy I wish I could talk like Zonie. Bill

Have you tried to lower the spindle and striking it with a wooden mallet, sometimes the vibrations will break it loose. I saw an older man(I"m probably his age now) back about 30 years ago hit the drive shaft universal yoke with a hammer to pop the joints out, striking his blows on the top of the yoke not on the end, and to my amazment the popped right out after three blows.

hoyt - best wishes on your recovery and the construction of that slim .40 cal. post a picture if you can when you finish it, i'd love to see it and i'm sure others would too. hang in there and don't worry about the hunting, the deer will wait.
