You shouldn't have to scrub the heck out of your gun just because you use Pyrodex.

^^^^This!!!!

Cleaning a muzzleloader is not rocket science, not even close. i've never a problem with the bore rusting.

The bores of many muzzleloader guns are badly pitted and rusted. They are going to stay pitted and will rust more easily. You can use steel wool, Scotch Brite or other stuff to clean up the bore: The bore will still be very prone to rust.

Watch what you buy on the internet. i've returned several roached barrels to sellers who lied about their condition.

IMO: Anyone who spends more than 20-25 minutes cleaning a muzzleloader gun is fondling the thing.

Well one way or the other if I don't put the time in the darn thing will rust.... I didn't pay for it so I can't really complain... Comes back to I have what I can afford perhaps here soon when I get a new gun it will be easier to clean

If you leave your guns in the garage for 4 days without cleaning, you're asking for corrosion. Plain and simple. And it doesn't matter which powder you use. I was told long ago to never let the sun set before cleaning any BP firearm. I live by that simple rule and the only corrosion or pitting I have is on guns from their former owners (who evidently not only let the sun set without cleaning, but put their guns in the garage ...)

Many problems associated with Pyrodex (or any powder) are actually Operator errors.

Oh i don't think the problem is pyrodex itself so much as the gun I just remember it cleaning easier back when I used to be able to find real black to shoot through it

Hi CC,
The only error is if is not clean. The two hours I spend cleaning the 4 guns we dirty is part of the shooting day. The cigar's my son-in-law and I smoke while cleaning is also part of the shooting day. It is all part of the ritual of shooting a muzzle loader. If cleaning up after oneself is that much of a pain, maybe y'all picked the wrong sport.

I don't mind cleaning and I used to have a cva mountaineer that would clean up no problem my current gun just isnt like that...

I have a couple of rifle that are a real pain in the behind to clean, so what! Learn to live with it. Goodness gravy, I could have cleaned two guns for how long this thread has been going on....

Yes,...some guns are harder to clean than others....Just the nature of the beast.
Also some things like conicals, The total number of shots fired, powder charge, Type of steel, condition, type of powder, etc... etc.... can all make cleaning more difficult.

Yup its a pain to clean .. Its as hard to get clean after one shot as 30 shots.... I can get it clean enough that I only have a couple little specks of discolor on my patch then dry it real good let it set on the heat to finish drying and oil the neck out of it (have used several different types) and the darn thing will still rust..... Until I scrub it again then its good

Of course the search function works just like the old Bing commercials bringing up everything that isn't relevant... And posting a link from another forum doesn't work. So you'd need to look on the Remington 1858 forum if you care to see unless you can get the search function to work for you as I know it was posted here a several years ago.

Rodwha....that was me years ago. Did you find the link? Are the pictures still there?

Don't use hot water. It can cause flash rusting. Use luke warm and you'll have better results.
Then just run patches down the barrel and finish off with some g96 to keep it from getting any rust.
