Pyrodex Powder

The only reason im interested in real black is if I get a flintlock otherwise I have no problem with pyrodex I think real black is easier to clean but I have no ignition problems so until I get a flint lock im not concerned and then I want a small caliber or I probably won't shoot it much since real black is inconvenient for me... However if the one store I've been trying to get a hold of carries it ill buy it

I can totally identify with you having once needed to count every penny to raise a family.

As you know, unless your shooting a flintlock, you really don't need to use real black powder.

Shoot your Pyrodex and have fun. :thumbsup:

Imagine saving up for that flintlock and or waiting for it to be built...Then the day it arrives....manure! No black powder :cursing:

Which is why I'm looking close if its going to be too hard ill just stick with a caplock for now but with income tax coming up i may just order a few pounds ill have to see one way or the other im looking at getting a 32 our a 36 for squirrels and other small stuff

I certainly understand. I just had to rearrange how I spent my hobby funds between my various hobbies (BP stuff, range time, beer brewing, rye whiskey/scotch, cigars, etc.) and instead of splitting those funds each month devoting the full funding to this or that.

I'm new to the whole traditional aspect, but unless your going for 100% HC, why does it matter what goes "boom" in your gun? I'm in the same boat, 31 years old with a 1 year old and a four year old and a wife. I have to cash cans in to increase my hunting budget (my own I don't go scrounging or begging). I shot Pyro in my modern gun and so far have only shot Pyro in my traditional gun. The reason is purely cost. $20 downtown versus minimum $40 online. I am going to the big city in February and I plan on buying a pound of BP if I can find it, just to see what the fuss is all about. I only know a few people who shoot muzzleloaders and they all shoot Pyro, and modern guns. I wanted to take up traditional muzzleloading because I like the idea of using a traditional gun. My number one goal is to be as accurate as possible, I don't care how I achieve it. And that's my choice. I don't know anyone my age (or older) who shoots a traditional gun. I would never put someone down for using a modern gun. All muzzleloaders are loaded the same.
We are all on the same team, and have the same goal, to enjoy shooting. Traditional muzzleloading, in my opinion, is a dying sport. Everyone who gets into muzzleloading goes the modern route. Why would someone come on here and ask help if they are going to get chastised for something they are using? Rant over

Put that money in a rainy day fund or your kid's college fund...

If shooting real BP vs. pyrodex means sacrificing your financial security or your child's education, by all means shoot Pyrodex or whatever is cheapest.

when I was posted from Ontario to Newfoundland, I received extra cash for the move. BP is very hard to find here, and I knew that. I hit every gun shop that I knew of on the way and ended up with the max allowable legal limit for transportation per person in Canada for black powder. I think. the prices ranged from $23 per lb to $40 per lb. most of the time, I bought everything the shop had, 3-4 lbs.
In Ontario, I used 2-3 lbs a year. since being in NL, I have used less than a pound in 18 months..... :td: but I don`t have to buy any for the next 40 years at this rate of shooting.....
I still have pyrodex and T7 that I have used in the caplocks, and will continue to use it in those till its gone- should last me 5-6 years

A big ok chunk of its going on the house payment right now and some stuff we need for the house tires for the cars and all that.... Since I got my new position at work im hoping to be doing better in a few years my wife needs a new computer so I figured id spend a few dollars on me and the kids too.... U fotunatly college isn't what it used to be... Its super expensive and there just aren't that many jobs available that really require it by the time the kids are that old I plan on being able to help them if they want to go but im going to try to convince them that blue collar skilled labor may be a better choice.... I work with quite a few people my age who went to college and have massive debt and they are still in bottom rung positions because they can't find a better job.. I have better opportunities than they do as a machinist I just had to start at the bottom and am working my way up... I've been saving for a kit and im leaning caplock cause then I won't have to save just to buy powder... And im looking storing a barrel I have put to 28 gauge and redoing the breech plug so it will fit in the rifle I already have because it won't cost me hardly anything except a little time

A suggestion for those looking for BP is to follow Grafs on facebook. They do some "flash" sales, offering no hazmat fee, or very low prices on BP. I think the most I have ever paid (given I bought in quantity) is $17 per lb delivered, and I think I have beat that more often than not.

That might not work for everyone, I get that.

When I shot Pyro I hit the Walmarts after Christmas when hunting supplies were on clearance. That worked good, as well, since for a big retailer the shelf space is more valuable than the 4-5 cans of Pyro that remain there hogging space at the end of the season. In fact, now should be a good time.

Where is it produced?? I can't find it in a google search, though the physical address of Alliant is Idaho, 2 states away from me. I pay just under $10 per pound at Sportsman's Warehouse every time I buy the stuff. Its the price that keeps me using it.

if you have a Bass Pro shop near you then you should be able to get real Goex Black Powder.

I buy my BP from the local Bass Pro. You have to ask the manager usually because the average sales guys don't know they sell it and will tell you they don't.

Unfortunatly bass pro is about 80 miles from me and I never go out of state that way.... Its not really that far but its just as hard to have the time to drive it as the money to order...

Alliant doesn't make it...It is made for them by American pioneer powder co. Presumably at their facility in Colorado.
Don't quote me though... :wink:

Which is more shocking; that one of the Real Black or nothing crowd actually used Black MZ. Or the fact that the SDS states it has cancer causing substances in it..
