Have a octagon to round tapered barrel with a snail for percussion. I want to convert it to flint. what would be the easiest way? grinding off the snail or pulling the breech plug, cutting off the snail and re-breeching?

Many snail breeches have an angled flash channel so simply grinding it off may not help your cause.

I would pull the plug myself then you have options.

You could go with a Hawken style flint breech (patent style with a chamber) and install your liner in the (plug) itself (which is an easy way to give you a hooked barrel if you are inclined that way) OR use a typical flint plug and put your liner in the side of the barrel.

Getting new barrel is by far the easiest way or building percussion.
To go flint this barrel will have to be re reached with a flint plug.

Auto spell check.......

That is re breech with a new flint plug.
