I'm very cheap just ask my wife. Over the last 15 years I've accumulated 10 muzzleloaders all bought/swapped for right but am itching to liquidate and consolidate some in order to get into flintlocks. Namely I have a 1" 54 cal tc kit hawken with 2 green mountain barrels to boot. 32 cal and 62 sb all in percussion. Any idea what it costs to convert the barrels outside of the lock? Thoughts or sell off stuff and just get fitted with a good rifle outright?

Indexing a plug to a barrel that already has been prepped for
sights and tenons can be a problem.

That's what's kinda nice about converting a TC with its hooked breech. The breech helps do a nice job of "indexing" in the cases I've worked with.

TC flintlock locks sell on ebay for about twice what the original whole gun cost back in the day and they are few and far between as well.

I bought an L&R replacement lock for a TC Renegade project I am working on. $175 plus shipping, pretty steep for a gun that may or may not be worth the cost of the parts I put in it.

If it were me, I would sell some of your parts or guns and buy a nice HC flintlock rifle.

Best idea really....T/C makes a great starter gun for a newbie.....sell it, let someone else enjoy it so you can upgrade to a Cadillac....

Bonus points if you know how the Cadillac (car) got it's name...

HC Meaning historically correct would mean a motorcycle ride up to Pecatonica River may happen.

Petaconica River Longrifle could fix you up nicely. I had them do an early Virginia style for me a couple of years back and I was more than pleased with what they sent me.

I faced the same conundrum some time ago, and found that i was able to get the breech plug from Track of the Wolf onto the barrel without too terribly much trouble. (Indexing it was the tricky bit) theirs was unfinished, so i had to do some draw filing and refininsh the barrel in order to make everything match, but now it looks great.

Go slow, file and fit, and try again - you will have to 'sneak up on it.'

good luck with your project!

You did say you're cheap. I'm cheap too and you'd probably be better off and just as cheap if not cheaper to just buy a flintlock rifle. I converted mine years ago and another the other way, flint to percussion. Spent about as much as getting a new one.

Considering the barrels I have figure the breaches at 35 each. A good lock aftermarket for sure 200 And an hour or two each barrel that puts me about 800 parts and labor for a rifle that can shoot 32 cal, 54 cal or 62 ball or shot. I think I'll try out some stylings of different rifles and see what fits. Maybe the tc stock altered from pecatonica would fit the bill.

Rather than pay too much for a TC lock, I would just spend the $175 for the L&R RPL. Too, do you really want to convert ALL of them to flint?
