No not the tool saver lube, thinking about how to make a rifling pattern that really will work with round ball, hollow bases and plain bases, not to mention paper patching them too. Been puzzling over it and don't think that TC was even close.
Any yall looked at the idea your own selves?

Been looking at groove geometry, slanted slides, groove bottom shape, decreasing groove depth towards the muzzle, the base ring diameter on REAL's and maxi's, not having to pony up extra for a custom round ball mold, how fast can the twist be for round ball... even looked at even versus odd grooves being different shape (now that one can make you go to the refrigerator).
Anyhow, looks to me like depending on the available molds and caliber you might think is in your ball park then yeah, it might be more than just doable.
Started off with this looking at nominally .58 caliber just because there is such a wonderful variety of molds.

Well, hate to burst your bubble,,
But your not going to come up with anything new to try that the military minds of several country's in a 350yr span from 1500 or so through 1860 haven't all ready done.
:idunno: :v

Ask Mr. Burton, he makes the best custom barrels I have ever come across, his twists are standard, and he slightly chokes the last few inches and few thousands......I have seen his barrels keep inch groups at a hundred yards..... :shocked2:

And for some weird reason, everyone has told me, 40 cal are the best for accuracy......

Nice thoughts tho.....can't reinvent the wheel in this case...

No doubt it is a process of rediscovery.
 Yup, done that a few times myself with several things.
No matter how hard I tried, I found the best shape for the wheel is still round.

I'm coming up with:
As many grooves as practical.
Approximately 50:50 groove to land widths.
Slant sided grooves.
Relatively flat groove bottoms.
Well, so far it sounds about the same as the .52 bore for paper patching off the shelf fifty rifle molds.

For nominally .54 or .58 caliber the ordered bore diameter could be selected to work with REAL, maxi and minie molds or else a few thou small to use a push through sizer and make sure that all the available molds will fit ok.

Years ago when I had a TC .54 Hawken cleaned up to .58, wish I'd gone through this exercise back then in selecting rifling style instead of just getting it done for round ball. Had I done so it would still shoot great with round ball and would also be a humdinger with the multitude of minie and REAL molds. And a spare interchangeable flat base plug for all those .58 minie molds could be nice for paper patching. Oh well, live and learn!
