I have a wooden box that measures 2-1/2' X 2' X 1' tall made of 3/4" plywood. It does have a hasp on it for a lock to keep unwanted people out. I store this in a 10' X 12' wood shed in the yard. I have been using this method since 1975 without issues.

Mine is of similar construction, hinged top with a padlock hasp. I store it in closet that is far removed from any potential ignition source. I stenciled the word "gunpowder" on the box in several places (Fire dept.'s want things like that prominently labeled). I also put a couple of desiccant packs in the box and change them a couple of times a year.

So what I'm gathering is most keep it outside of the living quarters. In a dry area. I don't have a shed and my garage is attached. I was trying to think of a safer containment method. I guess my metal cabinet is about as safe as anything.

Since heat rises, store it low. You could construct a fireproof box out of multiple layers of drywall.

The positive side of the new plastic containers is that they do not rust. I've seen tin plated cans rusted through from the inside. Some of my older BP has been transferred from the metal cans into plastic.
