A while back I was cleaning my Pedersoli/Dixie Pennsylvania rifle when I noticed the brass end to my ramrod was missing. It still had the one on the front where the jag screws on, but the back one had just disappeared. Looking at the bare wooden end revealed that they had not pinned the tip on as they did with the tip.
I shoved the rod back down the channel to the bottom and it seemed to go a little too far down.
:doh: I then realized the dang thing was wedged at the bottom of the ram rod hole... what would you do next?
 
You could chance adding epoxy and trying to glue the rod back in the tip. You could also end up gluing the entire unit in the hole.

The other option is opening up the ramrod hole from the barrel channel and getting the tip out that way. A piece of wood can be glued in to fill the hole once the tip is retrieved.
 
True - but I wanted to explore other solutions first.

Tried a cleaning rod with a wood screw on the end - would not grab.

Tried cleaning rod with bronze brush that would fit inside the brass end - still stuck too well to pull out.

Tried sticky tape on the end - still too tightly wedged.
 
Finally I realised all it needed was a guide to align and compress the spring as it traveled back up the hole. Shoved the ram rod back down the channel until it entered the brass tip then pushed a flexible wire coat hanger form the back to assist the now coupled parts while pulling the ramrod back up the hole and past the retaining spring.

WHEW!

:rotf: Yah I know - just take the stinkin' barrel off.
 
These things can be frustrating. Now pin that tip, and while you are at it, make a replacement ramrod out of a good hickory blank. Usually the rods from production guns are somewhat lacking.

Pete, you're too kind to the manufacturing sector (actually the guys who design, the folks who make the stuff do the best they can with what they've got ... and the design guys' train is driven by the bean counters ... but that's a tirade for another day)

I would posit that the inadequacy of factory made ramrods is about equivalent to the disingenuous, mealy mouth cowardice of the average Senator
