I went turkey hunting this morning, first time out for the year.

I didn't hear a bird. About 10:00 I saw a coyote slipping in to my calling. His chest was framed by two trees at 20 yards, I thought "I got you Bubba".

I was in a log blind I had piled up from dead trees that were down in the area.

Gun resting on the logs, my sights centered on his chest I touched it off. I have my fowler loaded pretty stout and to my surprise at the shot the yote ran off like nothing happened.

That's when I noticed the small cedar tree about 7 ft from the blind that I shot in two. I never saw it when I was sighting in on the yote because my sight plain was slightly above the actual barrel

We have so many coyotes that the turkeys seldom gobble and I let one get away.

I'll give you credit Eric in that you gave it a go.

I won't let one get by me if I can help it. WAY too many around here. I even killed one with my Fowler on the opener of our deer season this past November.

Best of luck turkey hunting, Skychief

Hope you got a few shot over or under and he had to make a 911 call as he left the area. It sucks but most people that hunt a lot have had something similar happen. You tried so you get a gold star from me.

A good effort! He'll be more cautious in his approach next time, which may save a turkey or two.

I've had the same thing happen to me when shooting at deer. They're naturally camouflaged, so a sapling trunk can blend right in with their body.

I have yet to see a coyote when I'm hunting anything. When I'm hiking, they're too far away. Only a matter of time....!

The only time I've encountered coyotes in the last 20+ years I've been carryig one of my flint rifles. I have never even been able to get a shot off at them before they knew I was there & started making their exit from the area. :cursing:
One of these days though, one of these days....

THis was my 5th armed encounter with yotes on the property, I was armed with my flinter or bow each time, all escaped unscathed.

I went back Saturday, heard the "PUTT" of a turkey that caught me but I never saw. I changed to the far side of the property and called in a hen and heard some turkeys that I didn't see.

Well you tried. Too many around here also.
I shoot any coyote I see. Not that I have anything against them, but they are too many and I figure any coyote stupid enough to be seen by me has been chosen by Darwin.

I shoot em where there are antelope here, no antelope I let em go. They eat baby antelope at a staggering rate. But I also note many many less rabbits here to hunt, may have to change my thoughts? I dont usually shoot what I cant eat or donate to be eaten. Having skinned more than a few of these critters I would eat worms n dirt and even worm dirt first! Ohhh the smell :barf:

Fox n coyotes can beat the speed of the flint fall..
would like to know what their vertical jump could be.
Think "spring steel" on caffeine..Keep at it Eric...

Coyotes have hurt a lot of property where I hunt. Few hunters but twindeling numbers of game. We blame it on the coyotes. You won't see them during the day but stay out after dark and you'll hear so many it'll send shivers down your back.
