I have not read this series...and am now thinking about jumping in. From what I understand it was originally written as a trilogy...and then the early years and latter years were added on. Any suggestions in how it should be read? Start with the trilogy and then go back...or start with the early years and read them in chronological order?

I'm jealous! I would love to be able to experience this series again for the first time! You're correct about the order they were released. The entire series was out when I got around to reading it (I think I actually asked the same question here years ago when I was about to start them).

You can read them in any order. I chose to read them in the order that they were released. Looking back I think I prefer that order because you already have a connection to the main character. That makes reading about his early years in the prequels more enjoyable IMO.

If you like Johnston's books you might look into the less known four book Temple Buck series by Edward Louis Henry (aka Poredevil). Of the two I prefer the Carry the Wind series but Henry's books were very enjoyable. Like Johnston, Henry was into reenacting/rendezvous and knows his history. He also writes an interesting story mixing his fictional characters in with real individuals and historical events. The storyline is similar.

It's all taste. I would want to read the trilogy first, I loved them, but didn't much care for the others. Some times a strong carachter loses something when the writer keeps him going. Dirk pit comes to mind, sometimes not. IMHO carry the wind was the best, and I would say start there.

IMO Carry the Wind along with the three prequels were the best in the series. I enjoyed the final three sequels also. I still enjoyed them but Borderlords and One-Eyed Dream did not hold my attention like the others. One-Eyed Dream being my least favorite.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be overly critical of members' fondness for dirty, dangerous, desperate men with big guns dressed head to toe in leather and draped in fur who take what they want. Characters largely invented by dime novels, purloined by Hollywood, and promoted by tourist traps such as The Fur of the Museum Trade to this day. Now, GLADIATOR movies -- THAT'S cinema!

I think on this forum we kicked around the fact you have a more jaundice eye directed at the MM then I do :haha: But...Gladaitor movies. That just brings to mind Peter Graves in 'Air plane' asking "Do you ever watch gladiator movies? :idunno:

For the overly critical of The Revenant, I say now is your time.....Your time to write and submit your own movie script to Hollywood. After the box office take of The Revenant, producers will be looking to cash in on more of the same....

Yes. They were, for the most part. So were "cowboys" for that matter. Gene Autry and John Wayne were Hollywood as well...but that doesn't stop me from enjoying them.
Life was rough back then, a hardscrabble existence in a hard country. You did well just to stay alive, and if you prospered there was always someone willing to take it.
You seem to have a pretty cynical outlook on the whole fur trade thing, but that's your right, I guess. My whole point is, if JJ was written and filmed in the same context as "Revenant" I doubt I would have seen it twice.

Alden is a smart boy, and at times you can tell he is right in his thinking...some times he agrees with me...but dont tell him, we will never hear the end of it.

The Muppets have Statler & Waldorf...Sesame Street has Oscar....the Muzzleloading Forum has Alden....like the others...it takes awhile but eventually and inevitably they become your favorite character.

But how do you tell? I don't see any numbering on the posts.
It is pretty amazing that we racked up 21 pages of "two cents"....
