"rockhouses and rhododendron" by john curry or "simon girty turncoat hero" by phillip Hoffman. anyone read these? any comments, recommendations?

I have Curry's first R&R volume. Very good, but, a difficult read for me. I'm much more pleased with Mark Baker's "A Pilgrim's Journey", both volume's.

ft Jefferson are you interested in getting rid of your copy of R@R? curry is taking orders for a new printing, but you wont receive it until next march....if you want to sell I would be interested.....

There's an article (part 1) about Simon Girty in the current issue of "Muzzleloader" magazine. Haven't read Curry's books, but have followed his work in "Muzzle Blasts" and now, "Muzzleloader." I find him too folksy and verbose for my tastes.

that's exactly what I like about curry....his "folksy" style. I also enjoy bakers writing style.

In a strange twist of fate I ran into john curry at ft. Fredrick today. I ended up buying his second book for $40. and got to talk with him for a half hour or so. a very nice man. you could see his eyes light up when he was telling me about some of his treks. cant wait to start reading......

Simon Girty Turncoat Hero is an absolutely top-notch read. Buy it or get it somehow. But if you buy it you'll always have it to read over and over again every couple years or so.

It really covers the subject intensively and I can't imagine a more well researched book on the subject.

Many moons ago I was asking the members if they knew of any good book on Simon Girty. This one was strongly recommended and I am grateful for the fierce advice.

So I'm just trying to pass along the good deed. Get it, by hook or by crook. You will be very glad you did.

ok I read BOTH books and recommend them both. rockhouses was a "different" type of book....not a typical historical book. lots of john currys personal experiences throughout..... the simon girty book was top notch. girty was a woodsman on par with Kenton and Boone...maybe a notch above.anyway buy and read either one, you wont be disappointed.

john curry still has copies of R@R 2 for $50. the adds are in muzzleloader magazine....he is also taking orders for a limited R@R1 run.....
