So i have this .52 Caliber rifle Allen Martin built for me with an almost 53" barrel. I have gotten an extra MBS brass 48" range rod with a 4" extension, that I soft soldered on giving me 52". with a two inch Jag I have no problem with general cleaning, but most scrapers are short. Should i just solder the short scraper to another extension or shape one out of a two inch Jag. The second question is does this rifle make my Keith Lisle 44" , and Steve Bookout 48" Tennessee seem short. :haha:

Bill

Either should work, as far as the jags go. As for the 2nd question, you have to know which direction you're gonna shoot before entering a woods! :rotf: Otherwise, you'll never get turned around in time...

I've never used a scraper on my flinters, never really saw the need...I just plug the vent with a toothpick, pour some water in the barrel and dump it out...I then run a few patches down, spray with WD-40, lube and I'm done...

After a day of shooting, it might take two treatments but that's it...

I'm with nchawkeye...never bothered with scrapers since regular cleaning gets the ca-ca out! Neat bunch of rifles, by the way...real sucker here for long barrels!

Awesome gun! It makes all of them look longer. I have been wanting to do a 48" Tennessee gun in a 47 or 52 cal.

I thought so to until I ran scrapper down bore . Not a lot of crud but enough to cause problems IMHO. It picks it up on the outer edge of the scrapper, like it's sitting next to where the plug meets the bore. :idunno:

I would have to stand on a chair to load or clean it ... :shocked2:
I have a ramrod/cleaning rod that is in fact a long hollow steel tube. It is extended/screwed together with a piece of identical tube by means of a steel threaded wire. the whole thing is soldered at the seam -very strong and nearly invisible ...

Now how do mail a rifle that long? :rotf:
The wood for those long ones was hard find I bet!
Nice rifles from good builders.....definitely keepers!

Range reports, and who was barrels from?
Marc

I would have to stand on a box to load/clean that. Look for wholesale suppliers of brass, stainless steel or Delrin. You can buy rods in 8' lengths and cut to what you want. Then fit jags and yer in bizness.
Nice looking rifle even if a bit different.

I made a 12" extension for my 44" range rod. It works good in every long gun I own of which 52" .75 caliber is the longest. Next longest is a 50" .50 cal rifle & a herd (3) of 48" .55 cal smooth rifles. 46" barreled guns all look short to me.

IMHO; breech scrapers are only required for smooth bores. I've yet to find a need for one in a rifle. Smoothies, on the other hand , are a different critter.

I wouldn't worry about a scraper. I have a few and never seem to need them. Of course, I always do a very good cleaning job on my rifles so there is no crud build up in the breach to be scraped out.

Those rifles are beautiful and I am not going to answer your question about whether or not the long barrel makes the other rifles look short. That is sort of like when a beautiful woman asks you "Do these pants make my butt look big?" It is an extremely dangerous question. The only correct answer is "No, darlin', Your butt looks lovely." Then shut up and let it go at that. So, if I were going to answer your question, I would say "No, all of those guns are beautiful just the way they are." :haha: :hatsoff:

I never used one either ... until I did and all kinds of crud came out. :hmm: Now I use a scraper about every third cleaning just to be sure.

Do you flush hot soapy water through either your touch hole or the hole that the nipple fits in? If you do, I don't know why you would have any kind of build-up in the breach. If you don't flush with hot soapy water, that is probably your problem. If you do use the hot soapy water flush, I am puzzled by how you can get a build up of crud in the breach area. :idunno:

That's nearing "chunk gun" status, meant to be shot over a long!
Walter Cline has some pictures of six feet and longer "chunk gun" rifles in his book. Mike D.

I did do a 46-1/2" taper 54cal barrel flinter. the barrel was from C.Burton....and shot one holers~!
