While wd 40 has some lubrication and rust preventive properties, it is really just what the name stands for: " water displacement formula number 40 ". It is intended to displace water not lubricate or prevent rust though it will do both to some extent. I used to use the old standby G.I. gun oil. But a friend who retired from special forces started me on Three in One Oil and it definitely is a better rust preventive. :idunno: :hmm:

I love looking up the MSDS for products, it's often very enlightening :haha: .

Kroil is just a mixture of a couple of petroleum distillates, nothing fancy. (I've also seen mention of the acetone/ATF mix before. All positive comments on it, and based on the MSDS I can see where it might be a better penetrating mixture than Kroil).

3 in 1 oil is owned by the WD-40 company, and it's just a heavy naphthenic oil. In other words, it's oil  .

I just wanted to thank everyone who posted thoughts on this subject. You've all given me plenty to think about between now and the next gun lubricant purchase.

Special thanks to Billinpatti for putting up with my rant on Pyrodex, and for his great advice on cleaning.

Just a few weeks ago I posted about exactly the same thing. Used BreakFree for 30 years - no rust - ever. Switched to Rem Oil this Spring - Swabbed the Charleville 3-4 weeks later prior to shooting session - Patches came out caked Red with Rust - really Bad. Spent a few hours getting Bore Back up to Snuff - never again - went back to BreakFree....

I'm glad someone else uses 3-in-1 oil! I find it works pretty well, a lot better than Rem oil, but people are always telling me "That's not gun oil, shouldn't use that stuff because (insert variety of reasons here)"

As can be seen from the tests of rust prevention I posted earlier, Rem Oil, for whatever reasons, seems to come out at the bottom in every test. After reading the results of the various tests, I removed the Rem Oil from my gun cleaning supplies and use it only as a lubricant on my electric shaver.

:haha: What do they think most "gun-oil" is? Some magic elixir? The ones that consistently work well generally have mineral oil products of some sort in them. Tell them to start looking up the MSDS for their favourite product. They might be surprised what's in it.
