Spring squirrel season opened a couple of weeks ago, but today was the first chance I had to get out. It was a good day for it, cool, clear and with light wind. I never have done my best squirrel hunting in the spring, don't really know how to figure them out, what they are eating on, etc. Also, on my place it's like hunting in a jungle, or under a low umbrella, the foliage is so rank and low. It was 15 minutes from the time I slipped into the wood till I actually could see up into a tree. Good thing it happened right then, because that tree had a young fox squirrel in it. He was feeding on green mulberries, and my shot at about 18-20 yards brought him down. I was hunting with my 20-gauge Phillips double flintlock loaded with 60 gr. FFg Goex and 70 gr. #6 shot, wadded with two 1/8" cards. I had recently done some work on the left trigger and was anxious to see if it would function as it should. It did, light, crisp and with a clean break. That was the only shot I had, but it was a good day. A small pond in that section of the woods is full of duckweed and bullfrogs, and their constant single note call, GULP, was fine background music.

Congrats on the shot I enjoy reading your hunt & fish stories.

Squirrel & dumplins?

Spence,
Your thread was just in the nick of time. I have not been hunting for almost 6 days now. Going through withdrawal.

Small game has always been very high on my list of enjoyable hunting. As I grow older I'm finding the physical effort of deer hunting a bit much at times, and a day spent skulking up on squirrels or kicking cottontails out of brier patches is beginning to seem like a smarter, more comfortable way to spend my time afield. That's only natural, I suppose, since that's the way I got my start. :haha: :haha:
