I have a question for you boys out in Colo. I have been out there hunting Deer and Elk and I thought about getting a small game licence to go after some squirrels as well but a buddy of mine says that they taste like pine cones. I was wondering if this was true.

So you want one of us to go eat a pine cone & tell ya if it tastes like Squirrel? :youcrazy:

Aberts are quite tasty, tho not as good as the eastern tree rats that eat walnut, hickory nuts ect. Last aberts I got I just put him on a stick over an open fire.

In survival training I've eaten various parts of pine trees, and none of them taste the least bit like squirrel! :haha: With the exception of pine nuts, they all taste more like turpentine. :barf:

Have not heard Woodland Park mentioned in a while, I lived there back in the early 70's worked for the forest service.Plan on visiting fairly soon.

I havn't tried any when Iv'e been out there. Just thought I'd ask the locals cause you all ought to know. Around here we have alot of red and some fox squirrels. I am not familiar with alberts, glad to know they all taste good. I used to hunt them alot when I was younger. I'm gathering parts to build a .40 so I'll have a good small game getter. Thanks,Dew

I have noticed the ones further south In The Gila (southeren NM) are a little more piney. Can't wait to taste them all!!

Yum!!

I usually chicken fry the hind legs, and shred the rest for gumbo!! Yum..

Sorry, Mouths watering!!

I had a friend once that begged me to let him hunt pine squirrels up at our cabin. He said they tasted like pine.

I remember how I fixed the pine taste as a kid; take 3 cans of cheap corned beef hash, a wool blanket, one roll of tp, knife, matches & a 22. on a 3 1/2 day fall camping trip. Eat all the hash in the first day and a half.
Cold wet & hungry sure seasons any meat!
We be mountain men! And we be wanting mom to stop at 7-11 for hotdogs when she came to pick us up! :rotf:

Rev, are the Aberts you shoot that black too??
Aberts around my place vary a lot, from lighter grey than the photo you posted to jet black. Now and then you'll see one jet black with a white underside, really a striking squirrel.

Yes, I have seen several that were light gray down around Manitou Springs and Seven Falls area. Otherwise, all very black.

Lots of changes since the Hayman fire. You will probably find it very interesting!

Get yourself to the northeast, and I'll show you some Neanderthal grey squirrels. They are abundant and always up to the challenge. Be more than happy to guide you to your quest in Vt., and NY. Happy hunting!
