Helluva deer. How long was the shot, if you don't mind me asking? I'm thinking about replacing the barrel on my TC Hawken and am considering moving up to .54 from .50.

That's definitely a trophy buck. Yep, he might even make the book. If not he still makes the trophy class which starts at 150pts, IIRC. Congratulations.

One heck of a deer, for sure!! I was wondering if 100 grains of FFF gave you a big jolt, how thick was your patch and did you use an over powder wad?? Again, congratulations on your buck.

Given that is was only about 15 degrees F that morning, and never really warmed up that much, I was pretty bundled up for hunting. So, no, recoil was not too much of an issue. During the summer months at the range, I will wear a padded trap shooting vest if I use that much powder, though. The patch was cut from the standard pillow ticking fabric I got from JoAnn Fabrics (haven't ever mic'd it). And yes, I did confuse the fabric cutting lady when I explained why I was not buying enough to make a pillow. No OP wad or anything else. Seems to be a pretty good load in my GPR. On a calm day I can get 2" groups at 100 yds with reasonable consistency. I will say that the round balls do tend to ride the wind a fair amount when it is not calm.

thanks for the info. I got one (1/2 the size of yours!) with a .530, .015 lubed patch and an over powder wad with 80 grains of FFF Goex. Mine's a new gun with a 38 inch 1 in 56 twist Colerain .54 cal. I still have some figuring to do. Cheers

wow, thats a monster! the head on that critter will make for many fine stories to friends and family!
