Rifleman, I was stating it in general not specifically. I sir would never call anyone out specifically in public thats not professional and how I am by now means. If you felt that way I sincerely appoligize not how it was intended. But theres a fact on hear people are biased to certain companies and talk down to others. I am part biased to Sitting Fox because well I have know the man my whole life and well he's like family to me. I have never had an issue with him ever or his product but then again I have never bought a built gun from him, only kits, but have seen his work and his shop. Either way I am gunna let this debate die from my end. Sorry if I offended you.

It is my understanding that this company's guns are just an extension of the "Corinth" school.
If so, then something in the range of what is "Corinth" is what one will get, no?

A few pages back Charlie gave the best advice. If you want a good working gun at a reasonable price make sure you hold it in your hands before you buy it. At that point a deal is a deal unless there's some hidden issue that comes to light.

I see a lot of this in the hobby, not plainly stated, but it's there: "I thought I had finally found the pot of gold, the maker who sells guns worth $3000 for $600, but I was ROBBED! The gun was only worth a lousy $600!"

There is sticker shock coming from the centerfire gunmart environment to flintlocks. Nobody with a Remington 870 bought for $300 gets told or reads in a magazine or learns, "that's a solid gun but it's not right for modern period hunting." But that can and does happen in the flintlock world with commercial offerings. So folks new to it are willing to double down on what they'd pay for a centerfire, but beyond that seems madness (and maybe it is). If/when they then hear that their hard earned money didn't result in a dream gun, it's hard to process/accept. Very understandable.

But shoddy or dangerous workmanship should not be accepted at any price level.

I agree with your logic, thats why I never buy a pre-made gun of any kind even modern guns with out first looking at it, holding it, and checking for fit and feel. I could not imagine spending 2000 bucks for a gun waiting a year finally getting it pulling it up and the comb is all off and the sights don't line up for me like I perfer, or the build is bad. Thats why I make my own guns so they fit me and if the works bad I blaim me. But truth be told there are few custom gun builders that have actual built guns you can buy on hand anymore they lose their butts by sitting on the gun waiting for it to sell. Well said..

Little John Z: I am pleased with your last responses.
If HE did not build my rifle he at least should not have represented that he did and certainly should not have let it out the door in the condition it was in. One could say I should have sent it back. After many phone and e-mail contacts I was not completely sure I'd get my $839.00 back so I kept it. I am a ad-hoc member of a group that does rifling demos at various history functions around the state. I use the rifle, when appropriate, to show people that ask what can happen if you're not careful from whom you buy. Out of courtesy, I never tell where I bought it unless specifically asked. As I said earlier, Caveat Emptor prevails. This is my last posting on this matter and am suggesting we let this matter die! I don't believe I mentioned previously that the gun was "in the white" when I bought it. Ron

TVM does say Matt Avance builds the guns. His name is even stamped on the barrels. There are other specialists in his shop with specific jobs (engraving, carving, etc) and unless it is stated Richard or someone else built a particular gun then you can count on it being built by Matt.

Or, could just be an extension of the "Woodbury" school and not a "true" established school with originals to study. :idunno:

I didn't know that group had in-house engravers and carvers.

I am the owner of the gun that's being dragged through the sewer in this thread. My sincere thanks to the person that sent me the link to this particular topic.

I have NOT complained to Ray about the gun nor do I intend to.

As this is the first flintlock I've owned or fired I discovered I was causing my ignition problems by using far too much grease on my patches and partially clogging the touch hole. Switching to Ballistol on my patches solved the problem. The touch hole is 1/16" if it matters to anyone.

Yup, The edge of the patch box lid was sharp and the frizzen contacted the side of the barrel in one spot. A total of 5 minutes with a fine file corrected both.

I am very sorry to see Ray take an online beating like he has in this thread especially since he absolutely bent over backwards to get this gun to me in time to deer hunt with. This was due to my poor planning NOT HIS.

I have no doubt that if I had a problem with the gun Ray would make it right.

As far as the in letting goes, Luckily I'm ignorant enough to not have the fine polished eye to be offended by it.

Bottom line, I like the gun. It fits me perfectly, It balances like a dream and handles just like I'd hoped, and now that I've gotten used to the flash of the lock it's proven itself to be more than accurate enough to put deer meat in the freezer this last Friday.

Would I buy another gun from Sitting Fox? YES! He treated me very well and made sure I had the gun in my hands in time to deer hunt with it, even though I left him precious little time to do it by the time I made up my mind.

That's all I've got to say about the matter except that in the future, If someone feels the overwhelming need to run down my taste in guns, bird dogs or whatever the case might be, How about having the common courtesy to let me in on the joke. :cursing:

And the truth comes out. Great to know what is really going on, and especially that you're happy with the gun. Here's hoping you put venison on the table with it.

After this thread you sure know who to invite on your hunts and who to leave home! :rotf:
