Well got to bloody my 54 Green Mountain Barrel Saturday! Opening day 5:10 in the evening. Deer walks into food plot, too late to see clearly. Should not have shot, thought it was a Doe....Well it was a Spike. Cost me 100$! Club rules must have 3 points on one side. Im used to sitting till pitch black with scoped centerfire. I will have to get out of that habit. I will be more careful from now on. I was about to get down when the deer approached the field. I hate to spook a deer out of a food plot. I will be carrying some compact binocs from now on. Still proud my old eyes can use iron sights and hit at the absolute last minute of light! Will post pics soon!

Well, at least you christened the barrel...I did exactly the same thing years ago...learned that Does are usually never alone, but bucks ARE usually alone so that makes gives me pause.
I came to prefer morning hunts with Flintlocks...get in just before first light and the light only gets better for iron sights.
Anyhow, congratulations on tagging one...

You are exactly right Roundball, I too know this after 31 years of hunting. I have killed several lone Does in food plots. But yeah, dont need to be shooting at uncertainty. I will be moving to the deep woods this weekend where light will fade fast.....54 Roundball is awesome!

Congratulations...especially considering you had to pay a fine for shooting the spike. I commend your ethics to keep the buck. :hatsoff:

In SE MN we have a law that nothing less than a 4-point on one side can be shot. Every year since the law was put into effect I find numerous bucks that don't meet that criteria laying in the woods rotting with shotgun holes in their chests. Found my first of the season today. Been laying there about a day, I figure, since it wasn't eaten on at all...big old slug hole in its ribcage...nice fat spike wasted. Based on the shot, it clearly didn't go far and was left to rot since the individual didn't want to take responsibility for shooting it. Had they called a warden and admitted what they did the warden would have picked it up and donated it to the food bank. The person would be done hunting as his/her tag would be used, but that would be the price for the mistake. Instead these losers let game go to waste. :cursing:

Ok I was trying to add photo to the "Money Buck" topic but my computer illiterate butt had to add new topic to get it done! Sorry!

Yeah its a shame Spikebuck. I feel hunting is sort of a religious experience for me. I am not a cold blooded killer, and have the utmost respect for the game I hunt. I even hand feed them the last few bites of grass after death to carry them into the afterlife. I do not kill what I dont eat. One reason I dont hunt squirrel or rabbits anymore! So disrespectful to kill and leave to rot, very sad.

OK I give up on the photobucket sorry fellas! You get the picture....or not.

I was trying to put all my pictures in my OP, but obviously didnt hold my mouth right or something and wound up with three different topics! :idunno:

This was the pic that should have gone with the "Money Buck" post. Deer taken with my new .54 cal Green Mtn. roundball barrel!

I been there and done once that his antlers were shorter than its ears but over 3 inches. I could not even see them in its silhouette or when it walked front ways to me at 40 yards. I started using yellow lens shooting glasses toward dark, they really help me. I was able to resolve the image of a nice buck at 40 yards last year, Impossible without these for me with 5 minutes of shooting light.

There. Fixed it.

Grats on getting that expensive meat.

Nice looking rifle  , the deer will taste even better now that you had to pay for it! .

yep I understand the $100 doe :( did that about 3 yrs ago about 10min prior to shooting hours ended a large "doe" walked into the small plot I was hunting over, looked her over real good didn't see any horns settled the sights pulled the trigger down she went before the GreyHawk and the MaxiHunter.walked over to her about 50 yds and saw the jewels when I walked up on "her"spikes were about 1.5 inches long.....Now I carry some good binocs to look them over with....Hey they :hatsoff: saved me another $100 2 weeks ago.For some reason the large does on the lease will often come into a plot alone in the Late PM,They are often 2-3 together in the AM though. Enjoy the food that the lord provided for you...It is only money :2 :v
