Yes, I have looked at and talked with Roy. Super guy. Incredibly talented and fantastic guns. If you can afford one of those, ditch the recommendations I sent for sure!

I rear site is bad! Shame on you! hahahaha. well if you're hunting deer it makes perfect sense. foul? dunno. clay targets? dunno.

I like two sights too, (okay I admit it).

I'm drooling over a nice Fowler, though.

As you can tell there are a lot of options open to you, especially if you are not trying to match a specific time or place. I like trade guns so I will tell you my biases.

I hunt with a 20 ga. that is stocked the same as my shotgun in terms of drop and length of pull etc. I use it as I would use any other shotgun I own. The problem comes from the fact that I am a round ball target shooter. Because of the stock dimensions, it tends to shoot high for me so I must hold accordingly.

Also, I shoot a lot, so with 21 balls to the pound I go through a lot of lead, about 30 to 35 pounds a year. That is about 600 to 700 balls.

Therefore, I built a 28 gauge trade gun with stock dimensions that allow me to sight down the barrel easier. It is a great round ball shooter but with a 42” barrel it is heavy. It is not the type of gun you would carry in the field all day and it is slow on moving targets. I get 32 balls to the pound so I am only using 20 to 25 pounds for the same amount of shooting. The 28 ga. also uses less powder.

If I had only one gun, I would probably go with the 20 ga. it is still my favorite.

One of my fowlers is a Roy Stroh, I just killed a turkey with it, see the hunting thread.
Shine has a Stroh fowler and rifle.

That sounds good, just might have to take a ride.did a map google and it's about a 3+ hour ride. I was up in Madison Me. In May to pick up my Hudson bay Freighter @ a fly fishing shop and your Rendevous is closer.

Hunter's Rendezvous is on Route 119 in Pepperell, MA, not Route 2. Rt 2 does not go through Pepperell. I drive by it once a month. Run by Sheldon Royal, who is quite a character. 25 years ago, before the web, I used to buy ML rifle components and BP supplies from him. Somedays, he's cranky and sometimes he's happy to chat. Never know which Sheldon you'll meet when you walk through the door. A friend once stopped in to buy some arrows to use as photographic props. Said he'll never go back. Sheldon's always got some beautiful muzzleloaders on the wall. Nice smokeless stuff as well.

I have the same issue. I want a smoothy.. I have NO IDEA where to start.

I could try to find a TC or CVA smooth bore, that would probably be easiest. I would really like a fowler or Fusil style.. I just hate to spend 800-1500$ on a gun that won't fit me. (don't really have a spare $800-1500 either) LOL

Thanks!
