Range rod

I got a T handle range rod that lets the rod rotate freely as the cleaning patch on the jag engages the rifling. I prefer the T handle over a ball or dowel type handle in case I have to pull a stuck ball and need the leverage.

Jim and Linda Fulmer sell nice ones out of one-piece stainless steel w/ bore protector. Jim writes for Muzzle Blasts, so you might be able to contact him through the NMLRA. They are good for at least a 44" bbl, and are threaded for 8-32 accessories.

Get a piece of brass, or stainless, 5/16" rod at a hardware or steel supplier. Tap one end 8-32 or 10-32 and pin a file handle on the other. Probably cost you half, or less, of what Track would charge.

While there is no end of people making range rods, I agree with the Linda and Jim Fulmer suggestion. Very pleasant people with a number of skills - notably powder horns. You might come across some other things while communicating with them.

Their contact info is in MuzzleBlasts - generally in the "Cooking Up a Taste of Rendezvous" section, but I will save you a bit of effort:

I made one out of brass. I drilled 10/32 on both ends and use a jag on one end and I have a T-handle on the other. I made it just for my gun, although I'm sure it's fine for others. I think mine is 37" or something like that.....

My mentor has a lathe and he centers the hole and threads it.

I also use brass under the gun for a RR and on my pistol too.

Nappers, ever think of just taking the ramrod from your gun, screwing on the T-handle and you have exactly the same thing without lugging around 2 brass rods. I keep a T-handle in every shooting pouch for that purpose.

I have a separate range rod for cleaning and I have a brass RR for my gun to seat the ball. I don't mind the extra weight, my gun is heavy already. It's got a 1 1/8" barrel and .50 cal.

I like brass I guess.....

I bought 4 8' brass rods to make my RR's and range rod and gave some to my buddy who makes short starters.
