What oil in the bore after cleaning?

A little bit of oil isn't going to be enough to gum up the works. Petro based products when mixed with BP and fired turn to a tar like sludge. I have heard of some doing it and not having problems and others just the opposite.

Do I see another test here? :hmm: Just may be the next one to try.

Any of the gun oils are OK and are good. Also, 3 in 1 and WD-40 is good. I would not use automotive products personally.
Birchwood Casey Barricade may be the best. It is certainly very good.

The only bad one is Bore Butter. :td: It is fine as a RB lube but poor as a preservative.

I appreciate all of the responses, that helps to clear things up. I have had pretty good luck with bore butter up till now. My father passed away recently and my Mom wanted me to have his Cabelas Hawken that my siblings and I gave him for Christmas several years ago. I know that it isn't a fancy custom, but I can still remember the look on his face when opened it up. He had always wanted a blackpowder rifle but could never afford one. I wiped out the barrel and the patch was a little brown. I a sure it had been sitting awhile. After I cleaned it out the bore looked shiny again, but I am sure the lands have been compromised some. I will shoot it to see if the accuracy has fallen off. At least I can buy a replacement barrel if I need to.

Thanks again for the help,

PW

AS long as the bore is shiny and there isn't any pitting present..it should be fine.
I myself use WD-40 as a rust inhibitor. I find it does a little better than REM oil( those are just my observations). Also, a couple of my buddies use ATF Transmission fluid, I haven't tried it myself..but am tempted to.
With that being said..motor oil Tranny fluid..machining oil...all this can be used, as long as you flush the barrel before attempting to load your rifle. Particularly the flash channel needs the oil removed with Alcohol, brake clean or carb cleaner. I use brake cleaner. I plug my nipple squirt some brake cleaner in the barrel...slosh it around a bit and dump the cleaner out the end of the muzzle. Then run a patch down the barrel and leave it sit for a minute or to to evaporate. Then you can load it and shoot.

It is surely precious to you and should be given your best effort. Rig Gun Grease is the best that I have found for longer term. If Baricade is the old Sheath, then it will also be a good choice. Rig 2 Sportsmans oil is a good light gun oil - was originally intended for fishing reels.

Sorry for your loss. Good luck with the rifle.

What have been your issues with BB? I was just wondering because i have been using it as of late. Mabey I need to switch, Please elaborate.

There is a very experienced BP shooter here in Prince George B.C. Canada that not only shoots everything antique, he also builds em from scratch and goes down to the lower 48 to compete in Kentucky and Virginia on best rifle builds. Some of his swamped long rifles go for as much as $12,000 as they are museum quality. Anyway he recommends WD40 in the bore after clean out and drying with Joy soap (little bit) and warm water. I started doing this and it works. WD40 seems to keep moisture away from the surface of the steel.
When I swab out with a clean dry patch the next day there is no brown stain on the patch.

I froglube all my weapons. It's great for after shooting or long term storage. Look it up on review sights or YouTube. I think you'll love it as much as I do.

I use Amsoil MP.It has a little solvent not like WD40 which is more solvent percentage wise than anything else.MP displaces water as does WD40,penetrates very well and is a great light oil and preservative.I use it on my fishing reels and firearms.

Plaid Wool,
Treasure that weapon. Gifts like that are keepsakes that I keep near and dear to my heart. As usual, lots of good advice. Personally, I use WD-40, Ballistol, Birchwood Casey products, etc. My main thing is that after long term storage, I always clean my barrel with soap and water prior to shooting. Also, after I clean my guns, I usually go back a few days later and run a patch down to see what's going on. If I see a little brown on the patch, I lube her up again.

Sometimes that brown stuff in old bore butter is just the bore butter decaying and is not rust I do believe. It is still spooky to see that brown when using bore butter as a preservative.

I use that Hoppes in the brown bottle, with moisture eliminating properties. Werx good fer me.

i use olive oil, i run a patch of it though after i flush the barrel with boiling water after cleaning. i alway's clean it out before i shoot it with dry patches. my friend uses Mobie 1 synthetic motor oil, and he swear's by it.
