    Patch material?

So from what I see on patch lubes, they're mostly used for easier loading, for keeping the fouling soft so as to get more shots between cleaning and make cleaning easier. Is there anything too critical about using a dry patch or is this too hard on the rifling? Greg

    Patch material?

They were open last X-mas day. It's supposedly one of the "super" wally-worlds. Musketman, you ever hear of anyone on here using Glycerin as patch lube? I have a bottle that was left over from the rattler skin I tanned and I was wondering if it/how it would work. Greg

    Patch material?

Made a call out to wally-world today and spoke with a lady in the 'craft section'. Apparently they sell quite a bit of fabric there too. She sounded like a lady who had been in the cloth business for a while and after asking her if they had any cotton pillow ticking, she "oh, of course. What...

    Patch material?

Zonie, sorry I forgot to leave that out. I do cut the material down into square patches. The full sized 4x4 patch would definately be a big mistake seeing as I just got that shop-rag out of the barrel last week or so. The guy I traded with on some other things said the barrel had a patch and jag...

    Patch material?

When I say 'commercial', I mean patches specifically sold for patches. I don't think we have any cloth stores very close here locally. I may end up having to order some material. That's the part I'm dreading. When it comes to things like that, I like to see the mechandise first before I buy. The...

    Patch material?

Wondering what you folks use for patch material other than the commercial material and what's the best source for it? The closest thing I've found is military cleaning patches which work well with a .530 RB, but they're pretty tight after getting down the barrel using the jag on the ramrod...

.54 Hawken is finally back up and ready

Roundball, I gave it a try on the email but it bounced back to me for some reason. Try mine and see if that works. [email protected] Greg

.54 Hawken is finally back up and ready

Rick, I just checked the sights and they are completely different. The GM sight is longer. The barrel on that .54 isn't really worth drilling and tapping for a new sight. I'll make due with it hopefully til I can get around to getting another barrel later on down the road. I sure do appreciate...

.54 Hawken is finally back up and ready

Got my .530 RB mold in the mail Tuesday and started doing some casting. Had everything ready to go and looked at the rear sight to find no elevation screw in it and the windage screw was stripped out to the point where no screwdriver in the world would have turned it. Pulled the rear sight and...

using shot in a rifled barrel?

The .32 GM barrel I have also has the newer type ramrod. I'll get in touch with GM and see what they have in stock as fas .62 smoothbores for the Hawkens. Thanks for all the information

using shot in a rifled barrel?

Roundball, Do you find that the Hawken stock causes a problem with it not having any drop to it when you're shooting with the .62 barrel? Greg

using shot in a rifled barrel?

What would be the best way to go as far as barrel/caliber for a TC Hawken that has a 1" diameter barrel already? Does Green Mountain make a smoothbore along the same lines as a 20ga equivalent that I could switch out? Might have to make a call to Santa:-) Thanks Greg

using shot in a rifled barrel?

So a .62 smoothbore could be used as a 20ga, right? If so, that sounds like a good plan. Would be nice to be able to shoot patched RB AND shot Greg

using shot in a rifled barrel?

Is ther any safe way to use shot, say #6, in a rifled 54 barrel without damaging the lands and grooves? I figure a sabot might work, but figured I'd better ask. Thanks

Questions on getting started the right way (.54 Hawken)

"A .54 caliber round ball with 50 grains of FFFg will yeild 1445 fps.... A .54 caliber T/C Maxie ball will require 85 grains of FFFg to achieve 1435 fps." Musketman...Could you give me the min. and max. load in a 54 caliber using FFFg and a PRB? Still have quite a bit of FFFg left and would...
