    Traditional ML'ing on the rise?

Back in '78 I was doing about what I do now...buying many of my guns and parts through catalogs. Mail ordering from places like Dixie, Navy Arms, Mowery, etc. The only real difference was that back then you looked at a paper catalog and called them on the telephone, instead of online ordering...

    Middlesex Village Guns

Anyone have experience with these? ** Yes, I have been shooting an MVTC New England Fowler doglock for some time now. Over 1000+ round ball and shot loads through the bore now. It became my favorite shooter almost instantly! How is the finish? ** Glossy, very glossy. Also, the shapng can be a...

    Buck & Ball question

I have had EXACTLY the same experience with my .69 Charleville. Loading buck on top of the ball almost always produces a nice triangle of 3 buckshot holes around one large hole at 25 yards. I get about the same results at 25 yards using a paper cartridge (brown lunch bag) or loaded loose with...

    Chinese powder

I get GEOX for about $16.50 after tax. But the gun shop that still stocks it is on the way to the club range, so it is convenient. Plus, buying it there helps keep the only local source I know of alive and stocking BP. Jack

    Dixie Round Ball Mould

If you can get a LEE mold in the size you need, get that. I've used LEE molds for most of my ball casting for years. But if you need an odd size for a large bore, That's a different matter entirely. I have been using a Dixie "hair straightener" mold for my .69 muskets since 1979 or so. No, the...

    Cleaning a pinned barrel rifle.

Yep...I also basically do what Swampman wrote. I use sharpened twig to plug the touch hole though. Jack

    REMOVE FLINT TO CLEAN?

I remove the flint each and every time that I replace the flint. Other than wiping it off, the only time I touch it might be to move it forward as it shortens over many shots. I clean the flint with the lock, but don't remove it to do so. Never had any problems doing so. Jack

    Flintlock Revolver

Yes, but with the LeMat; in addition to a 9 shot revolver, you get a 20 ga sawed-off shotgun too! Not bad for $600. Jack

    NEVER NEVER EVER

Not to be nitpicky, but the majority of M/L military rifles and smoothbores after 1750 or so sported steel rammers. That said, I use wood rods. Only ever had one break in decades, and that was my fault. I chose a bad piece of wood, missed the grain run-out dead center. But that's the...

    Doglock blunderbuss should arrive today.

I did check out the Fowler and have been shooting one for months now. In fact, I rarely shoot anything else these days, it is so much fun. The 51" barrel handles better than you'd think. To elaborate on the question about the inside of the lock: The "doglock" is just a flintlock. Aside from...

    Lock Removal

I built three CVA guns from their kits around 1978 and none had a spring-thing to secure the rod, nor did they need one. I wonder when they decided the rod would fall out without a spring retainer? Jack

    Barrel cleaning

I use plain warm water. I plug the touch hole, fill the barrel about a third with water, hold my thumb over the muzzle...then shake it a bit to swish the water around inside. I dump out the dirty water and repeat the process until I get clean water dumping out. "Rinse and repeat as necessary"...

    Bought a priming flask today.

You can always push it twice to despense 6 grains. Which is what I do at the range currently. Or hold it down at an angle and pull it along the pan to despense whatever charge you like. I used to have one on a priming horn that I had filed the spring loaded valve tip on an angle. That way it...

    Lock Removal

Interesting.....which manufacturer puts a rod retaining spring that is held in place by the front lock screw? And on what model gun? I'm just curious. Perhaps a military arm with a metal rod? My 1763 Charleville doesn't have a spring though that I recall. I've had a couple guns where the front...

shooting buck and shot in Bbess

Yup.....I've made buck'n'ball cartridges exactly like that photo. They make an interesting pattern at 25 yards out of a shortened .69 Charleville musket. I usually found that the large ball hits the aiming point and the three smaller shot make a nice triangle about a foot or so around it. I've...
