    Re-Boring And Rifling A 50 Caliber Hawken

I have been away from this website for months, and am just now returning. I also spend time with the Colt Forum website, and others. At the time that I built this Hawkens (1967) I was in touch with many shooters who made the Brady, TX matches. Not certain, but I suspect that someone at the...

Untouched "Black" Percussion Pennsylvania Rifle With Whitmire & Wolff Lock

I doubt that a nice piece of fiddleback maple would have been used if the maker was going to paint it black.

    Re-Boring And Rifling A 50 Caliber Hawken

I have been away from this website for months, and am just now returning. Your reply was extremely informative, with the various measured octagon barrel sizes, tapers, and lengths provided.

Untouched "Black" Percussion Pennsylvania Rifle With Whitmire & Wolff Lock

Apparently, this rifle "sat" in a museum for a very long time. Both the wood and brass trim are essentially black. The steel parts have acquired a light rust and grime. A card was attached saying that it belonged to one James W. Patterson. His early locations are unclear – although...

    Re-Boring And Rifling A 50 Caliber Hawken

Thanks for providing Robert Hoyt's contact info. I will call him and leave a message, if he cannot answer at the time. My question about loss of barrel length stemmed from a "feeling" that there may be some rifling tool "chatter" near the muzzle and breach end. The breach end would be left...

    Re-Boring And Rifling A 50 Caliber Hawken

Thanks for providing detailed information on Hawken barrels that you have seen and studied. All I have is the old Hanson book on "Plains Rifles". My eyesight is also going down hill. But even when young, I had difficulty in using open sights. So for serious shooting, I added temporary peep...

    Re-Boring And Rifling A 50 Caliber Hawken

I totally agree. Who can be recommended to do that 62 caliber re-boring job? Is any loss of barrel length involved?

    Re-Boring And Rifling A 50 Caliber Hawken

I looked at the possibility of shortening the barrel, but feel that the reduced sight "radius" would be detrimental to accuracy. That micrometer tang sight assembly is just silver soldered on, and I plan to remove it. Also the hooded Lyman front sight was a temporary experiment. It will be...

How Often Are "Remington" Marked Barrels Seen On Completed Percussion Rifles?

A very nice example! Great execution of the candy-striped rod too. I wonder, does that rifle have a hooked breach, or is the upper tang integral with the breach plug?

    Re-Boring And Rifling A 50 Caliber Hawken

That is a good point. Right now the CG is near the fore end cap on this half stock Hawken. In other words, it is about where my left hand is positioned (as a right handed shooter). Moving the CG back towards the breach plug forces some of that weight to be borne by the crescent buttplate (my...

    Re-Boring And Rifling A 50 Caliber Hawken

That may be a better idea. With steel weighing 0.287 #/Cu Inch, that 7" barrel reduction would drop the weight by 1.7 pounds. With a 50 caliber bore, my 1-1/8" octagon barrel weighs 0.244 #/Inch of length.

    Re-Boring And Rifling A 50 Caliber Hawken

As they say "old too soon, smart to late". This applies to my question here. In 1966 I built a 50 caliber half stock percussion Hawken, using a Bob Roller lock and Douglass barrel. W. L. Mowrey of Jacksboro, TX made the tang-breach plug assembly. It is a pretty rifle, inletted to perfection...

How Often Are "Remington" Marked Barrels Seen On Completed Percussion Rifles?

. Thanks for your reply. I had heard that many times "Remington" was on the bottom of the barrel. I guess it depended on whether the actual rifle maker thought that the Remington name would add value and appeal to his rifle. When I built a 50 caliber Hawken rifle in 1966, I turned...

How Often Are "Remington" Marked Barrels Seen On Completed Percussion Rifles?

Thanks for your reply with this information. I know that Remington celebrated their 200th anniversary recently, and this legacy mostly began with barrel manufacture.
