How much Gun for Big Game? or How Little!

What caliber/"how much gun"? Depends on the state's hunting regulations. Here in Idaho, you can use a minimum .45 caliber for whitetail deer, and puma, but need a minimum .50 caliber for mountain goat, big horn sheep, and I think prong horn antelope, even tho they are about the same size as a...

    Maxi or minie

How "distant"? My .45 caliber CVA "Kentucky" rifle (1:66 twist) was a tack driver out to 110 yards with PRB. 110 yards was the maximum distance at the rifle range range I shot at. There were no other gun ranges with-in a few hundred miles that I knew of, anyway.

    Would You Buy This?

.36 claiber? Nope. .44 caliber "Sheriff" with 5 inch barrel? Oh yes.

Is this a Revolutionary War era rifle?

If a recent photo PLEASE preserve what is there and get rid of that active red rust. No need to make it look "new", or "restore" it. 3 In One oil or WD-40 and OOOO steel wool will eliminate the rust. (clean the bore, too) Hopefully the barrel and lock are not pitted too bad, and no pin holes...

    Pyrodex

I haven't used Pyrodex (RS) since 1987 ...? ... 1988 ...? I don't remember it being swab after each shot, or any harder to clean the barrel than DuPont real black was. Have they changed the formula?

    Historical accuracy in big manufacturers

Most consumers of sidelocks don't know the differences and to be honest, they don't care. Just like 99.9% of those that view the rendezvous and CW reeinactments. They don't know if a belt buckle or a button or if a article of clothing is machine sewn or hand sewn, or if a flintlock or...

    Explosive Cannonballs

Both sides in the Civil War had hollow cannon balls filled with powder and steel or lead balls, and a fuse that was lit when the gun was fired. (fuse was placed breech end when loaded. length and speed of fuse burn determined time before the ball exploded.) Grape Shot, Canister, and Solid...

    Lee REAL bullet

Agree. I entered a Rendezvous shooting match once using that rife. (the radio commercial for the event said (quote) "You brave souls can enter our shootin' match!".) I thinked to self "I can shoot a daRn broom stick at 100 yards with my rifle ... I may as well go. Might be fun." No one beat me...

    Traditions breech?

I don't know why CVA and everyone says it is so hard to put the patent breech together. I had a used CVA "Kentucky" rifle that wouldn't fire reliably, back around 1987. After pulling the drum and then the breech plug, I discovered the previous owner left a daRn cleaning patch in the bore. (Yes...

I agree. Hitting where you aim isn't necessarily a small grouping, or a large grouping, come to that. However, I'll venture a guess that 1 (one) MOA at 100 yards which is what my CVA Kebfucky Rifle I had years ago was quite capable of, isn't precisely a large group size for "hitting where I...

    Yes or No on tacks

I vote "yay". Tacks will improve your grip, and make it "yours", different, and stand out from everyone else's. Tacks were added to stocks by owners "back in the day", so you have historical precedence, if you're worried about such.

    Please vote by number

The only option I have personal experience with is the Taditions Kentucky Rifle kit. (mine was an identicle CVA, but .45 caliber). If you're going to be shooting patched round ball exclusively, get the Traditions, with PDB friendly 1:66 turn rifling. With a patchex .440 round ball in front of...

    Lee REAL bullet

Out of curiosity, WHY is a wad "essential"? I've never used a wad in any of my muzzleloaders; rifle, pistol, or revolver. PRB or conical. All hit where I was aiming. and what is this UNDER powder wad of which you speak?!?

    Need a new Frizzen?

Contact Dixie. They sell replacement lock parts and complete locks for all their guns. At least they did before the kids took over.
