    I hate to be THAT guy... but I've had nothing but success with USPS for the most part, but you are right... they will not pay an insurance claim. I flat out don't ship a firearm thru them anymore. I'll use shipmygun and just drive into San Antone to a customer service center for UPS.

    The bottom may fall out, but custom rifles are more popular than they ever have been, and it's not grumpy old codgers on SS buying them either. I'm 31; I have 6 custom rifles. My John Bergmann Caplock SMR is my most prized, most shot, and most hunted with.

    Texas is okay... we get a lot of time to hunt, but the public is dismal and isn't getting any better. Most of the State PHL is all bow, a few are shotgun/ML. The national forests allow rifles/ML/slug.

    Supply and demand. There will NEVER be as many traditional muzzleloaders built and sold as modern inlines. They simply cannot be made fast enough to meet demand, hence the back log. It's not an apples and oranges comparison.

    Traditional muzzleloaders are more popular now than they ever were. Try ordering a custom rifle from any contemporary artist right now... you're looking at 6months, to a year, if not more. Even a Kibler kit takes quite some time to arrive. Dont look at match or rendevouz attendance, look at sales.

    Whether you believe it's happening or not, it's happening. I can see if you're using small ball/thick patch where there is a chance it wouldn't be overly dramatic, but it is happening.

    Your eyes can't measure in a thousandth of an inch. They're not perfectly round anymore, and when they get slapped on the behind by BP they're definitely not going to be a ball when they exit the muzzle. Obturation.

    I'm much the same way, except I don't go as far as you do to make sure they're identical. I just take two properly equipped, and capable rifles along with me and that's that. In fact, I might even switch em out and carry a different one for morning or evening hunts, or depending on the day.

    I would imagine dropping a small amount of lead in a ladle and melting it by placing the ladle in some hot coals produced lead hot enough, fast enough, to make wrinkles a non-issue. Speculation though.

    One side, both sides, just enough to matter... just don't use too much. I cursed the stuff for years thinking it didn't do anything to help keep fouling soft or make loading easier, until I realized I was just using too dang much of it. I'll still pre-soak patches in it after melting a little...
