    Jack Garner Signed Flinter

I've got one of his in .54. It's a good rifle. A .40 makes a great target caliber, but it's a little less than I'd like for deer. It'll work if you make a good shot, of course. A .40 is the minimum caliber legal for muzzleloaders in my state and is smaller than required in others.

Paper cartridges in a rifled gun?

There's no reason it would be unsafe as long as you measure your powder. Now, accurate? That may be a different issue. A lubed cloth patch helps grip the rifling and seal the ball to the bore. You will not get as good a seal with paper, but it might be "good enough", depending on your needs and...

Paper cartridges in a rifled gun?

Do you mean pre-loaded paper cartridges like typically used for a smoothbore musket? It certainly would work fine in terms of a pre-charged load, but I don't know how well it would work in terms of patching for a roundball. I don't know whether simply ramming a whole pre-made cartridge down the...

What got you interested in flintlocks?

My Dad was a literature professor - a lot of it early American - and could tell some great stories. He would make up Davy Crockett stories when I was a kid. Later I found the Disney Crockett movies on the back shelf at the movie rental place. This was about 1988 or so. So I've always been...

    Wind and Blackpowder

I was gonna add something to this effect. Some kind of sealant - chapstick, beeswax, etc. - can keep out most snow, mist, drizzle, etc. If it's raining any harder than that, I'm hunting the butcher section at Safeway.

HEARING PROTECTION can you hear me!

I've got the same ones and have the same experience. They're fine as long as it's just the blackpowder or shotgun ranges. But inevitably, some guy with a muzzle break on a 300WinMag will set up next to me, and then nothing works.

    Dixie Mountain Flintlock .32 value

Curious whether you cleaned/wiped or sharpened your flint before or during this session. Your issue sounds like a dull flint or one where fouling has "lubed" the flint or frizzen and is keeping it from sparking well.

    I’m curious

I should probably add that my 65g load for a .495 ball is fine at 25-50 yards, but it drops and loses enough velocity to get wonky by 100yds. At 80g its back to being on target with a 2-3 inch group. I haven't worked it to see if I can get smaller groups at that range, yet, nor have I tested it...

    I’m curious

My .50 hits about 1 1/2 to 2" low at 25 yards, zeroed at 50. I use a 65g chqrge of 3f. So you light not have to hold that much higher. I'd start with a hold even with the top of ots head and see where you land.

    Woods Walk course

When we had one, we used a bunch of animal shapes; mostly small game targets at 15-30 yards. A couple were large NRA steel silhouttes at 100-150 or so. I've done one with a big steel triangle made of half-inch steel rod. Some knock-down steel poppers with a cord to reset them (sort of like what...

    The Red Green Show

I love that show. I first watched it while at my in-laws' place "up north" in mid-Michigan farm country. It could have been filmed down the road from them.

    40 Kibler SMR,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Do you dry the patches before use, or do you use them damp (if damp, I assume you squeeze out all the excess)?

How many muzzleloaders have you built

Just two, both precarve sets. As much as I love woodworking and tinkering, I just didn't enjoy rifle building as much as I hoped I would. I may do a Kibler SMR or plain WR, but I don't see any more part sets in my future.

    speaking of flints...

Love that show. Watching it now, actually. I remember that episode. I was over there several years ago helping a church do some maintenance and found some big chunks of black flint in their garden. Wish I'd have kept it.

    Pic of Half stock Flintlocks

I like that English rifle alot. There are some nice ones on this thread. Half stock flinters may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I rather like them.
