2024 cap update, bad and the bad

I got lucky today. I bought the last two tins of Remington #11's in the county.

    time machine

Yep, and no cell phones! We could actually take off on a fishing or hunting trip without even thinking about being out of contact with anyone. It was good to just disappear for days at a time in the woods or on the streams without nearly as many people around as there are now.

No, but you would have had to rub down her horse and throw it some hay!

Woodsrunner, Is this normal for walnut?

I haven't heard of adding the vinegar. What does it do?

Woodsrunner, Is this normal for walnut?

What some, maybe most, folks don't know is that Black Walnut, juglans nigra, is a different species than English Walnut, juglans regia. The English Walnut is referred to as thin shell walnut since the nuts have a thinner shell than the nuts from the black walnut. Thin shell includes all the...

    Bullet molds

I tried a mold like this once. I think they're called bag molds since they don't take up much room in the hunting bag. The one I used cast pretty good balls but the short handles got too hot to handle in a hurry. I like my Lyman and Lees a lot better.

Woodsrunner, Is this normal for walnut?

Walnut typically has large, open pores. If you want to fill them after sanding to 320 grit put 4 or 5 coats of Tru Oil on the wood. Go over it lightly with grey Scotchbrite between coats. Give the true oil a couple of days to cure and then wet sand the stock back to the wood using water. The...

Pecatonica NW Trade Gun Build Help

I've not had any problems with Pecatonica either. They've been good to deal with but it's a good idea to check the layout early in the project.

Pecatonica NW Trade Gun Build Help

Unless I missed it no one has mentioned locating the ramrod hole accurately. I do that before I do anything else on a pre-carved stock because if it's way off you may even have to send it back. To locate it just drill a small hole, 1/16" or so, back near the breech and centered in the barrel...

Got the permalyn lid off, First coat of finish on!

If you use a nail and poke a hole in the lid what's left in the can will last a lot longer. This works great for Tru Oil and I suspect it will work for Permalyn.

    Drum help

Any one who can run a lathe can make a drum. The problem you may run into by making a smaller one is that it will be too small to hold the nipple. I'd just install the drum you have and not worry about it being a little larger than the barrel flat. It sounds like you're starting off on a neat...
