    How much powder?

Thanks, that is good advice. I am not new to muzzle loading but I am new to flintlock, and I finding out here that those are very different. I in no way would indicate that "energy" is a substitute for shot placement. What I intimated was that with the inherent movement in flintlocks, a...

    How much powder?

    1. Please point me to where I messed up so I don't do it again. I have looked for rules but have no idea where I came close? 2. I haven't shot this gun enough to say whether or not I have ignition problems. I use 3F specifically so that it can get into the hole in the breech and I put 4F into...

    How much powder?

Dave, if I have breached a rule, crossed a line, or even just committed a faux pas, I sincerely apologize!

    How much powder?

????? I stated it in both of my posts? It's the most critical factor.

    How much powder?

Thus the reason I said it requires a well placed shot. Which is not a given with flintlock rifles, it's not a given with any rifle!

    How much powder?

While I agree that it's quite amazing what a "big", "slow" bullet will do as far as penetration, I can assure that a 45-70 cannot penetrate 4 feet into meat and bone, or even meat alone. The hydra-shock of tissue is very different than wet newspaper. Having killed many deer with a 45-70 and...

    How much powder?

When I took my gun to a flintlock specialty shop, the owner told me the exact same thing. I will do that once the season calms down and they are not swamped.

    How much powder?

There is a lot of difference between a clean humane kill and knocking something down. I plugged these numbers (MV = 1500, BC = .161, 245 gr power belt) into my ballistics calculator and at 60 yards there is only 900 foot pounds of energy, at 80 yards there is only 835 foot pounds. While 835...

    How much powder?

I think you mean 8 "inches" of meat right?

    How much powder?

I wonder about the energy with 55 grains? Is it sufficient for a clean kill at 80 yards?

    How much powder?

I use 3F in the barrel so that it will get down in the breech hole. I put 4F into the touch hole. I have yet to have a hang fire or an undue delay.

    How much powder?

Now that I have secured some 3F and 4F powder, I would like to start doing some shooting with this "abortion of a gun" I bought. The Traditions Pa. Pellet. As soon as this 16 inches of snow is gone I plan to go to the range and play with my new toy and would like to get some suggestions on...

    4F in the barrel

Where does this elusive airball come from?

    4F in the barrel

On this "abortion of a gun" I bought, that Traditions Pa. Pellet, this is how it is drilled so I don't think the little powder that can fill the breech plug makes a difference. The hole is about 1/8" diameter.

    4F in the barrel

Good! I'm glad I asked the question.
