    Bear Hunt

I would guess either bait or less likely, dogs. My own lack of skill has never let me close any nearer than 100 yards on a stalk. My one bear taken with unmentionable was 95 yards, further than I would be comfortable with muzzleloader. I dearly want to take one on a stalk with a muzzleloader...

    Is this worth the trouble?

Lots of great advice, thanks! I was worried about the size and dealing with the core; also whether the knot would be a desirable figure or an impossible grain to work with.

    Is this worth the trouble?

Was clearing some fallen trees, this one I think a black walnut and this section just said to me "pistol stock". I have never tried to cure, saw and carve such a piece; what do the experts here think? It has been dead and down and dry at least a year, is it likely to be a decent piece of wood?

    Backyard ranges

Shooting in the air is not a good option. Some years ago was working in a small town ER on New Years Eve, 12:05 am a line of cars and pick ups came screaming into the parking lot and the multiple family members of a teenage boy dragged him through the door yelling "Juniors shot, he's dying!"...

    What lube?

I guess my question about spit patches was shut down because of the bad boy responses, so now I'm here and glad to learn more about patch lube preferences. I guess I'm now obligated to try the mink oil lube, question is how do you store it in the field/range, and is it practical for use in a...

Best way to use spit patch?

Enzymes in spit cause rust?! I thought most enzymes were proteases/lipases/carbohydrases rather than promoting iron oxidation... sorry had to yank the chain a little. Now I'm more determined to chew those patches; after all if the old guys could chew their used tow after swabbing the barrel.

Best way to use spit patch?

I have learned a lot! Thank you all. I'm waiting for the weekend to try the spit patch at the range to see if I can be consistent. Now I wonder what that mysterious grease was in the patchbox/grease hole, surely any rendered fat would melt and flow at anything warmer than freezing.

Best way to use spit patch?

I have read some comments that disagree with the thought that spit patches quickly dry out... but have never tried to test it myself

Best way to use spit patch?

Pardon my inexperience, what is the the best procedure for using a spit patch? Particularly in the field rather than at the range. Does one hang a strip of patch material on your bag, chew one end while you pour powder then put the wet end over muzzle, start ball, cut patch? Also separate but...

noob - what do i need, what is a waste of $ ?

Couple of things from my wealth of inexperience... The teardrop shaped capper from Cash is easiest, holds one full tin of caps (100), fills by just pouring in caps and shaking to turn caps upright, gets cap in position easier. www.tdcmfg.com. site also has endless gadgets to tempt you for...

    frozen game question

Thanks to everyone for the help. Im looking forward to rendering fat for patch lube!

    frozen game question

Just brought home a bear from Montana and need to figure out best way to use the meat. I quartered the bear, then had it frozen within a day after I skinned it. Had to cut the quarters in half after frozen (used a sawsall!) to fit them in cooler for transport home so now I have frozen bone-in...

    What happens to patches?

Any advantage in accuracy to using strips cut at the muzzle vs precut round patches? I suspect patch cut at the muzzle would be more precisely fitted to the ball with no extra since most precut have a size range ball they are sold for. I have not tried any accuracy tests to look at this...

    What happens to patches?

I shot new gun, .72 double rifle cap lock recently for my initial sight in, noticed all my patches ended up about 15 yards out, completely intact. They looked so good I am tempted to reuse them. This struck me as odd because I have rarely found more than fragments of patches when shooting my...

New Muzzle Loaders Or Projects For 2021?

I want a fowler this year and keep procrastinating on buying a kit/parts. Has anyone put together a Chambers fowler kit? Any advice for a minimally experienced builder?
